Help Trs Outdrive
I was running my boat this last weekend and slow down then got back on it and it felt like it was in neutral if i idle it it would move as soon as i gave it some throttle it would start slipping trans oil look good didn't hear any different sounds coming from it check linkage i am lost is it toast thanks
|
Did you spin the hub on your prop? Unless it's a solid hub, then yes sounds like you lost the plates in your trans. Did you smell the trans oil?
Check your prop first though. |
Yes I check the the prop it is a sold hub but checked anyway the trans oil smell normal and looks normal
|
What does it feel like if you turn the prop? Any crunchies? Drain a little oil out of the drive and see what it looks like.
|
I have not drained any oil yet but when I turn the prop every feels fine
|
not trying to insult you inteligence but is the trans oil level up to par?
Also does the engine rev way up when you apply throttle with it in gear, like it would if you where in neutral?? |
yes it is to the full mark and yes the engine does rev up just like it was in neutral
|
What trannies do you have? Merc trans or B&M??? Maybe you broke your pump?

It is a mer cruiser is there a sheer pin in there some ware

I had something similar happen to mine. There is a seal on the clutch pressure plate, which holds the oil in. This deteriated and popped out slighly jamming the pressure plate and destroying the seal. So no engagement of gear. I had a noise when this happened as is jammed still touching the clutch plates, and they slipped. Thought Id blown it.
Turned out it was a good job it did as some of the internal roller bearings used for reverse were seized, and one of them had its shaft spinning and wareing through its housing. This was a result of poor lube. From a holed cooling tube. Now I am renewing shaft bearings and all seals on both boxes. + some of internal roller bearings. Out of interest, what gear oil are you using. |
if it's a merc there is a key that holds the gear for the pump. The gear likes to break right at the key. But, When mine broke, I didn't have forward or reverse. I had no pump pressure at all. I don't see how it could break so that you have pump pressure at idle.
The trans is pretty simple. but you have to pull your drive, engine and trans to get at the trans. |
I still had reverse
|
The clutch plates probably deteriorated.
If you had any water in there they go away fast! |
I drained some of the oil from the out drive nothing it looked great no particles or water in it the transmission oil also looked great both smelled like clean oil no burnt smell the transmission will go into gear both forward and reverse on trailer no sounds coming from out drive or transmission i don't know what oil is in there because I only recently bought it if i need to replace it is there a stronger transmission i can put in there i have a motor being built now for it it will have around 550 hp and what do the run in price
|
No they were ok. Easy to spot as oil froths out the oil vent
|
When everything is cold i do have forward and reverse after about 10 minuets of running in gear it quits just like it went to neutral this is on trailer thanks

Clutch pack done for! Call Tom Huber, Huber Marine Transmissions, Inc. 615-794-7583. He can make your MerCtrans II good for over 500 H.P. Otherwise you will HAVE to go to a B-W unit and that will take up 5.5 or 6.5 more inches length depending on whether you use a 71C or 72C unit. Marc Berman at BAM Marine is also a great source of knowledge on this stuff. Just got done researching all this myself and those two guys can answer all your questions and save you lots of floundering around. Later! --- Jer

THANKS EVERYONE I thank god for forums like these that can give some one a helping hand that has know idea of whats going on before this boat i had a 21 ft jet
|
let us know what the problem was, when it becomes clear
|
FYI it was the clutch plates on my old Baja. Fairly cheap rebuild if you pull the engine yourself.
|
Trs no go
