So does Sparkplugs.com list them or not for $1.99???

You can also get them from a NAPA auto parts store. They carry NGK. I believe I paid $2.15 a piece.

I would be interested to know how that plug works out on a N/A motor. The BR7EFS is a colder plug with a shorter reach than the stock plug. It may increase the transom soot on the HO's. For $16 it's a pretty cheap and easy trial though.

I have a pair of 496 HO's, and had a similar problem. We found a fuel starvation problem. If you do not have an additional in line fuel filter the chances are this may be your problem. There is a screen in the inlet side of the boost pump that gets clogged, because the fuel is not filtered until after the boost pump. Merc. is aware of this problem and added an in-line filter, but they are a little pricey. We ended up installing Racor filters.

That was it, problem solved

Screen was packed full, probably from fountain
tapping the tank, couple of bugs lasted through
2 years of gas bath. John

I had the same problem as island hopper on my 496HO. I'ts to bad that our boat builders are that sloppy on cutting and tapping there fuel tanks. In my opinion fault lies on builder not merc. I did find a fram filter for $ 3.99 ,merc wanted $50. I'm currently running without the inline filter hoping my tank is clean.

So, has anyone confirmed Christopher's discovery on the spark plug brand/numbers (BR7EFS, #1094) on their 496HO yet? I've been meaning to pull mine to check'em out, but haven't gotten around to it yet...

496 Plugs

Hey Rick,

My mistake !!!!! The BR7EFS plugs are not stock !!!

Whipple changed them when they put my supercharger on. Sorry for the bad information.

The plug listed at sparkplugs.com as the NGK 1094 which is supposed to be a match is not a platimum plug. Aren't the Merc plugs in the 496HO platinum???
