HELP ...my motors
i took the heads off to ck everything out(make sure the mice didn't make a nest in there etc.)
the cylinder walls and pistons look good nice and tight, so then we pulled the cam out of one, and 5 of the lobes have little flat spots ,not good..... think i'm getting 2 new cams and lifters now..... any help on cam selection would be appreciated.... these motors were supposed to be rebuilt by a local reputable machine shop about 6 - 8 years ago and have been sitting ever since(hence cking for the mouse nest) the heads i have are 048 casting, they do not look like small peanut ports to me , and the valves look rather large also.... the pistons look to be 30 over as .030 is stamped in the tops i will take pics of the heads and the pistons to see if someone here can help me figure out what i have.... the cams i was thinking of getting are Part No.: 315-132561 Category: Engines & Parts-Cams & Lifter Kits Crane PowerMax Cams Description: PowerMax - Fair idle, standard camshaft for Mercruiser 400, 405, 420 425 HP and 525SC-454 CID engines, applicable to 350, 365, 370 HP mildly modified engines with free flowing above water exhaust DEG. Check the valves to be sure they don't leak. If you are close to Highland NY, pm me and I'll give you a shop to call Paul

help i need to order cams , need some good advice, will the cam i picked above work good yes ? no ??
|
Those will work great. Better if used with a Holly 800 and an Performer Air Gap manifold. Smooth idle, good power. I've had Merc 400'S and 420's. Good running reliable engines.
|
ok here's what i have
merc 330's 030 over( fresh bearings and rings) massive bassett offshore water jacketed headers long tube(5") holly 850's with vac sec orig q jets carbs brand new dui distrib's performer intakes the above heads, (which i can't seem to idenifiy ???) 048 is the casting # are they large or small ovals?? i need to put these baby's together and get in the water. 40scarab thx (theres one for the cams i picked) other opinnions Please..... |
Those are large oval ports, same as 049 or 781 castings.
|
thanks jaf302, do you boat in the hudson??? where's tillson ny?
|
Yes, I launch at Kingston most of the time. I have a Red 79 Wellcraft Nova and a 302 Formula basket case. Tillson is between Kingston and New Paltz
|
Those heads may actually make more power on a 454 than square ports. Under 500 ci. square ports are overkill. The rest of your parts sound good. Those motors will make over 400 hp. Except for those wierd exaust manifolds???
|
40scarab, no i'm not using those log manifolds, i'm buying
a set of bassett offshore headers used, they were on a 540 / 680 hp blocks they look new( they are prob overkill for my application but i don't think they will hurt? jaf302, ah your real close, a 79nova 250 was my very first boat had alot of good times on that boat.... |
Sounds like you've got the whole package. Get it back in the boat and have fun!!
|
i made a mistake, the heads are 049, the casting made the 9 look like an 8...... any other cam suggestions????
should i use the 850 hollys or the Q jets???? |

heres the headers
stainless steel offshore headers Straight out tailpipes 19.5 above cranckshaft center line 33" engin centers Valve covers can be removed with headers bolted in place |
If you want to ad a little to it have a shop change the valves to 2.19 and 1.88. I had this combo in my flat bottom and it made 460hp with a single four barrel.
|
i think its got 2.19 intakes in it
|
Are your engines enclosed under a hatch??? If they are you can't use those headers. They are water injected not water jacketed.
|
XCAV, I'm not used to seeing this type of photo content from you:D :D

XCAV8,
That Crane cam you mention in your first post of this thread is a decent enough of a cam for your engine. The 049 casting on your head is an EXCELLENT GM oval port head. The GM 049 oval port head comes stock with a 2.06" intake valve and a 1.72" exhaust valve unless they have been previously modified. Those heads would work MUCH better with that cam if you at least had a bowl/pocket port job done on the heads. You could add larger valves but then there are more machining processes you must do, etc. You will make probably about 450hp with that engine combo. Tink, Basset did or still does make a double wall header---though they are rare or don't see them much---but I DO know what you are talking about. ;) |

XCAV8 If you have any questions contact Jack Boyd. He is one of up state NY best keeps secrets. He builds strictly High performance engins for over 20 years. his shop is un believable. and his dyno is capable up to 2000 hp. He don't advertise. strictly word of mouth. He is about 40 minutes from Albany. I travel up there frequently and live close by to you. I could drop off parts for you if you like. His # is 518-661-6089 , some day we might bump into each other on the river. I'm got a blown 28 scarab called Dysfunctional, I'm frequently at the Newberg area with a bunch of other oso members. get that boat running & join us for drinks.

Since no one addressed carbs. You can use either but I think the 800's might be a little large. They could be jetted and tweaked to work but the Q-jets might give better flow velocity and be an easier tune-but keep in mind I am biased towards Q-jets and have spent a lot of time with them. If you or whoever will be final tuning those engines is more comfortable with Holleys then they will work out better. It really depends on what you like to work on.
......use the Q-jets :D |
Hot Boat -- thx for the info ,i will definitlygive that guy a call...
hmmm i wonder how long it would take to do the heads,(resize the valves to 2.25/1.88,) and port etc... ? i definitly keep an eye out for ya.......... insptech --- thx for the input, i too thought the holleys might be a little much for my set up, i will prob try both.... i was also looking at the Edelbrock 750 marines, don't know much about em, i would have to buy them ,but the price is right.... i'm putting an order in on tues for all the goodies heres my list so far Crane PowerMax Cams-- the cam above Crane Lifter Kit Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap - large ovals I desided to up grade to a pair of these K&N Standard Carbureted Style Flame Arrestors -- 6 3/4 how long will it take to get this stuff, is there a better place to order than cp in california ?? |
Sounds Great, good luck!!!
|
These jugs are nice but the others are sweet!!:D :D

Summit Racing will be cheaper on prices.
Free shipping, and you'll probly have it in two day's. If you have part numbers, do a manufactures search on there site and you'll find they have the stuff in stock. Even "marine". I had gotten my spark arrester from them, saved $30. |
Just looked up your parts at Summit
Intake- same $229.95 Cam #132561- more $218.99 Spark arrester-#59-3370 less $101.95 Try giving them a call, they might do a price match. |
I just cked summitt prices, cp beat them hands down on everything, except intakes and they were the same on them...
i hope cp can get me the stuff fast, i would rather order from a local dealer but , i don't even know where to begin , i don't know of any performance marine dealers near hear.... i couldn't find the flame arrestors |
did you do the manufacturer search for K&N #59-3370???
|
Try JEGS...They are tons better than Summitt....

Can o worms !!!
Now the cam bearings are shot, crank can use a polish,
Can't win...... |
Originally posted by XCAV8 these are double wall, water jacketed ,they can be run wet or dry these were built back when john bassett was still alive.... supposedly the guy paid 9k for them mine say 1986 on the collector they are 2 inch inner primarys and they bolt to a flange type adapter with special slotted gaskets that go in between. Paul basset father made these headers. I asked him to make me a set but He was reluctant to do it. Have them pressure checked they have been known to leak in the collector area. P/s If you ever want to sell them please dont hesitate to pm me. Good Luck |
