Port Engine wont turn over
Well we boated all day yesterday. the rain moved in so we left the boat at the slip.
came to the club this morning and the port motor will not click or turn over?????? When I turn on the ignition I get gauges????? I checked the shifter and moved it around. it appears to be in neutral???? I have the battery switch on all for both batt. the starboard starts and runs, the batt gauge on the port reads 14 volts with the starboard motor running? The motors are 7.4 MPI Greg |
What does the voltage drop to when trying to crank it?
|
First disable the ignition. Pull the lanyard for the motor.
Next, may not be easy to do, but you should put a test light to the small wire that is attached to your starter motor. I think it is yellow with a red stripe. Attach the clip of the test light to a good ground. Have someone attempt to crank the motor over. If the light lights up, the starter is bad. If it doesn't, check the wiring going back from the starter. There is a relay mounted somewhere on the engine in this circuit. |

When I have the starboard motor running, the voltage on the port is at 14 volts, thats when I turn it to the first position on the ignition. When i turn it to crank it, the gauge for the volts does not move. In fact none of the port gauges move as I try to crank it. The trim gauge, volt meter and the oil gauge, will move when the key is turned on, but nothing else happens after that. all of the gauges remain the same. I drug the boat home tonight. I may look at the ignition switches tomorrow.I think it could be the problem? Checkmate the engine compartment is too tight for me.on that side.If the switch doesn't work i will find a little guy to go in Greg |
The goofy safety switch for the drive was or is going bad.
I am taking along a jumper and some splices , if it acts up I will bypass it. We are heading to the lake. Greg:) :) :) :) :) |
the switch for the neutral safety was bad.
I am glade it was something easy for a change Greg :) |
Glad to hear it is an easy fix.
