Help..Oil Cooler Question

I have a mid 80's 454/400hp Cyclone pair of engines and I need to know if when I winterized with auto anti-freeze in a 5 gal. bucket with a hose hooked to the sea pump intake, the anti-freeze will or did fill the oil coolers that are mounted in the bellhousing. I put 5 gals in each motor, first I drained the blocks and exhaust manifolds....fired the motor up and let it pump the bucket dry on ea. motor.......Fred

I would have to think it did Fred. Did antifreeze/water flow out the exhaust??

Mike, yes anti-freeze did spray out the exhaust....are there drains in these housing to get water out before winterizing?....Fred

you should have had plenty of antifreeze in them Fred!

Plumbing goes from the water pump directly to the coolers, then to the engine. They were definitely full of antifreeze if it made it into the engine.

Thanks for replies guy's....I have since found a flow chart showing how the coolant passes thru the engine, as Gary said the coolant goes directly from the sea pump thru the bellhousing coolant units first so I should be able to rule out that area as a problem, Thanks, Fred

If you're having a cooling problem and have raw water pumps don't forget to check the inlet side of the oil cooler for pieces of previous impeller blades that might have grenaded. I found about a dozen in mine that had gone thru the trans coolers cause their holes were larger than the oil cooler. Some were hanging around the edge under the lip, and some were lodged in the cooling tubes that go through the cooler. It might be tough to get to but worth the effort...

I'm just getting a little water in the oil....hope to find that it's the riser gaskets....Fred
