Cam selection

Which cam has performed the best for members in a similar application Crane 731 or 741 I would like to stay at about 5800-6000 rpm's no blowers if the motors perform good enough.

540 ci
9.5 to 1 comp
Merlin 305cc aluminum heads
all good parts

use isky cams. they're just better. call them up and ask them. just don't expect them to stay on the phone for a long time, holding your hand, have your particulars ready in advance, you'll get good answers and a great cam.

If you want turn 6000 RPM Perhaps you should consider a Solid Roller. I have the Crane 741 in my 540 but cannot provide any input because the boat is still at the Glass shop:(
I have read in posts by (Experts) on this board that 5500 RPM is about the peak RPM for a Hydraulic Roller even though the Cam Manufacturer will tell you that their hydraulic Roller Lifters will work at Higher RPM.

I've got the 741 in my engine. I was told, no more than 5400 rpms for a sustained duration. I could wing it out to 5800 or so for short bursts. The problem is in the valve train. I guess that if you used a rev kit with the springs on the lifters you could make the valve train last. Alot of guys are spinning those rpms, but I suspect that their engines are short lived. They are also proably using a solid cam so that pump up isn't an issue. Anyways, I know that my 741 was still making more power when the test was shut down at 5500. I've seen this trend in other engines as well.

My mistake what I should have put was 5300-5500 RPM

741 will kill the 731. Isky has one that will beat the 741. Talk to ?Richard Iskenderian and tell him blown 1500 told you about him.
Theirs are the best, but their selection is not as varied as Crane.
Hydraulic rollers don't like turning over 5600!!! AFR has a rev kit for small block hydraulic rollers(good for high 6's to low 7's), but no one I know has one for big blocks.
