Oliver parabolic rods?
are they worth the extra money? say on a 500-600 Hp big block turning less than 6000 rpms?
|
In my opinion engine parts are like alcohol, the higher the price the better the quality or so it seems.
although Oliver's might be a little overkill in that combo. I'm sure some Eagle, or Lunati's would be just fine. If you go with Oliver rods , you might as well go with a custom Windburg crank, and a Dart block with Billet caps , etc. etc. ;) :D |
Just looking for bullet proof on a budget! I'm thinking eagle crank and rods but who knows....
|
I've heard of quality control problems with Eagle. Specifically, the tollerances need to be checked. I also know that Lingefelter used Olivers in just about everything that he built.
|
I've also heard that you have to have Eagle cranks checked to insure quality. I'm running Eagle Rods with no problems although the builder did check them etc... Run up to 5500 with them.

what about the Callies Dragon Slayer?or Cat?

I have a set of Oliver Billet Rods in My 406 they are 16 years old they are still nice pieces .I sent them back for reconditioning about 10 years ago.I also Have a set of Their Billet Rods for My 572" I have no experience with them as it has yet to run.The cost is more than two times that of an Eagle Rod.I bought a set of 6.385 Eagles with the L-19 bolt upgrade for My Budget 540" and they were $365.00 delivered. The Olivers were like $1200.00 Of course by buying the Eagles were are cutting our own throats by helping to feed the Chinese and the Dirtbags here in the states that are exploiting the cheap labor get richer!
Rob The Callies Dragon slayers are made in US Forgings They are machined right in Fostoria Ohio. Call Callies 419-435-2711 and Talk to Don or Brook they are good guys. |
Rws,
Your correct about the cheap labor stuff but unfortunalty if I had to go the Callies crank, Oliver or Carrilo rods in my 540 like i would have liked to I wouldn't have been able to afford it. 2 years ago I paid $1300 for an Eagle rotating assy. , Sure I had to have the crank worked on a little (Moldex) to fix the rod journal radii and rebalanced but that was only another $300. I guess you buy what's within your budget.:) |
So if I want to do a budget 496 what would you guys buy? maybe I should start another thread....
|
Dyno, I would be interested in this too. I am thinking of building a 496 also next winter, on budget.
|
The Lunati billet rods are close in price with the Olivers. When I built my motor I had two of my own choices. Oliver or Lunati billet. I went with Lunati billet only because the engine builder got a better price on them, so in the long run it was like $400 differance. I feel as they're both equal in quality and both are made in the USA.

It depends on your budget.
To some people calling Sterling and ordering 3 (got to have a spare) 1200's is on a budget:D :D Unfortunaltey in my case I don't think I could afford the flame arrestors on those motors:rolleyes: |

Kit #SKC49634 |
Back4more
I've looked at those kits several times for a referance point, I've had some emails with the tech guy at Flatlander and was treated like crap I'd pay double to buy from someone else! |
Sorry to hear this...guess they don't want to sell a min. of 2 kits.

Dyno,
I have been running Oliver rods in my 565" motor for three years. They are indestructible.. Well I had a wrist pin walk into the cylinder wall at 4800rpms and put an S bend in the rod, but never cracked it.. Oliver magnafluxed. It is now one of thier show pieces at the events they go to. I would go with them again, because they do treat me right and it is an American product built here in Grand Rapids. I originally bought them at a real good price from Callies.. those guys are the greatest!!!!! Call and talk to Brook, topshelf guys, they back their stuff up beyond belief.. Just my experience!!
