K&N filter and Jetting etc.

I replaced my 3x8 inch Eddie Marine flame arrestor with a 6x8 inch K&N. I was told that the 3x8 was a little small for my motor. Motor is a 461 - 470HP with an 850 holley. Is this going to through my jetting off at all? Do you guy thing the larger K&N is more just eye candy or will it make any difference?

K&N Filter

Hey Scott....
Nice to see a Connecticut boater on board.

I had the HP 500 air cleaner on my 540.
Switched to the K&N Large unit....

RPM went up 200..
motor seems to mid-range run better.

OH by the way.... HP 500 air cleaner for sale Now a collectors Item $200 or best offer. The unit looks awesome....very impressive when the hatch is lifted...

Thanks for the info. I really do think mine may be holding me back a tad. Just looked small and restictive.

Yeah, seems like very few of us CT performance boater. At least LI is close...:)

If the flame arrester is restricting the air flow you will need to check your jetting when you go to a larger unit. You may be OK but if you where jetted properly before you will need to add more fuel now to keep the mixture right. An air restriction is just like a choke. It makes the engine run rich. More air = leaner.

I have stock 500HP Carbed and the air filter looks very dirty. How do I go about cleaning this filter?
