496 Sea Water Pump
What are the general steps to inspecting/replacing the sea water pump impeller on a 496?
|
Do I need to remove the belt, idler pulley, and then the pump housing? and obviously disconnect the hoses.
This is much different that my old 454 mag. :) |
Todd, first remove the fuel/water seperator assembly. It is only 2 nuts and will make access much easier. Loosen the hose clamps on the hoses going to the pump. Take the belt off the pump pulley. The pump housing is installed on a couple of studs. Once they are removed you can remove the pump. Once the pump is removed there are a number of bolts on the back side. Remove the bolts and you will have access to the impeller. If you determine you need a new one the part number is 47-862232A2

Thanks ccarloss,
So I should have to remove any pump mounting brackets. Just the pump housing itself correct? |
Todd, actually the pump is attached to a bracket that is attached to the block. It is easier to remove the bracket and the pump as one piece and then disassemble them on a bench.
|
Thanks again.
I am checking it because I cooked an exhaust tube. I checked the sea water inlet to the oil cooler and found nothing. I plan on checking the pump next. |
