another steering question

I have about 2 inches of play in my steering it is at the helm. Could this be the helm or a cable? It has a TRS drive and stock steering. I know the solution would be hydraulic but This is not in the budget. If it is the helm can you buy replacement parts? Can an adjustment be done? The steering operates smoothly otherwise. Thanks in advance.

iTS Hard to tell but the helm can be replaced cheap and the cable ,just be sure to run a telflex supreme cable check the drive pins ect. but it most likly the helm or cable

How do I check this? Do I pull the backing plate off of the helm and are there parts that could fall out? Thanks Bobby for the response
