upside down oil filters

What are some of your "tricks" for changing oil filters to keep the mess down?

I heard of punching the filter to break the vacuum.

Cord,
Do you think there's any chance it will punch back. I'm not much of a fighter.

The first filter change on my 496 HO w/ upside-down oil filter resulted in a mess. The second filter change I punched the top of the filter. Not only did I still get a mess when I took it off, I couldn't set it down on it's top without another leak!

I take a screwdriver or a punch and poke a hole in the top center of the filter. Let it drain along with the oil, and there should be no mess. I can pull the filter right off without a single drop of oil making a mess.

Frequency, give it more time. It should drain out completely.

Me either. The trick is to use a baseball bat. I like the aluminum ones because of the way they ring. I'll just beat that filter until it's a oilly mess then I don't have to worry about it every trying to seek payback.

Use a large Ziplock bag under your filter as you remove it, it helps a little.

The solution is to loosen the filter slightly to allow air past the gasket. The oil will flow out of the filter in about the time it takes to drink two beers. Then you can remove it without any drama.
