flywheel vs flexplate
Can I change flywheels out for flexplates on a Borg warner trannie? I've got The trannies that mount from behind and on top. What mods will I have to do---spacers between flex and drive plate?? What about the starters I can't find any gear reduction starters for for this type?
Any insight to this would be great, being that this is an internal balanced engine I can't use the old flywheels? |
flex plates go the wrong way ,,, just get a 427 mcClould flywheel and get it checked for balance but you should not have to do that , 427,396 cid chevys flywheels will work fine ,you need the weight of the flywheel

Boats tend to surge with lightened flywheels. I would stay with the heavier flywheel.
I have seen horror stories of boats with lightened flywheels running on the ocean and the rpms fluctuate because you don't have the added inertia of the flywheels keeping those rpms steady. |

Can I not just take my 454 mark iv flywheels and get them neutrally balanced?? I guess I didn't think about it long enough, but that makes sense, also it probably wouldn't help if I pop out of the water-- more chance of hitting 6500 rpm before pulling the sticks back:( |
you can get your 454 flywheels zero balanced but they have to grind off a big weight that only comes on the 454,, a 396,427,
or and aftermarket would be better summit carries them ,ect. |

Do your starters mount on the bell housings behind the engine? If so, you will require flywheels that have a shoulder machined on them for installing the ring gear to the rear of the flywheel, instead of the front. Also be careful to buy the correct diameter flywheel if you get a new one. Good Luck Bulldog |
I'm going to take the weight off the 454 flywheels and get them neutral balanced, that way I don't have to worry about getting the right ones.
