alpha question . . again . .
this is GlassDave. i am postimg at the office and didint feel like signing off of packs name.
just need a quick rundown on what it takes to get a left hand drive on my stinger. right now it has a pair of right hand Gen1 alphas (1986). do i need to change the whole drive or just the lower. thanks all. . .sorry bout runnin this through the tech board for the million'th time  :D  |
Just the lower
|
You'll need to reposition
the shifter cable in the shifter mechanism, to the opposite side of the lever, unless you want to run it with the l/h rotator in reverse shift position:rolleyes: jt |
You can change the lower. Good luck finding one. And DONT run an alpha in reverse. Bravos only.
|
The alpha cannot be run in reverse.
|
jt. is thinking "Bravo" ! You need new hardware to go L.H. with an Alpha. --- Jer
|
yep . .i remember they cant be run in reverse like brovos. also how do i know what the drive ratio is and if it is a left hand (incase i find one in one of my local yards). is this info stamped on the case? mine are stock merc 260 instalations. will all the V8's have the same ratio and the smaller motors be different? thanks again
|
jp are you refering to cable hardware?
|
Sorry, No; Wish it were that simple. It's a special lower gear-case. The gear ratios all happen in the upper case. And I could be wrong about this, but I think that maybe the L.H. unit didn't shift. So you had to deal with the docking thing with one engine/drive. The cool setup was opposite rotation engines (requires a cam and starter change to one engine - probably cheaper than the L.U.) Put the L.H. prop on the rev.rot. side and have fun. --- Jer

hmmm . . . now its not sound'n so easy. i found counter lowers on sterndrives.com for like $1900. if all i hd to do is bolt one of those on imnot to worried about the price for the ease of doing that. also i dock on one motor now anyway. altough it would be nice to split shifts, its not mandatory. my main goal is handeling at speed. with the two rights it seems to pull to the right and i really want to eliminate that. thanks for all the info guys. i'll figure this out yet. right now i need to get a shoping list togather to hit the ground running.
|
Dave,
I might be able to help I will make a call in the morning. Remember I said might:D |
thanks scott . . let me know (cell# 419-461-1484). was thinking about getting this wraped up by the LEOPA poker run. dont know if im giong to get a batboat or run mine so i wanna be ready just in case. later.

To clarify my statement,
once the l/h rotation lower is installed, the shift cable will have to be switched at the quadrant, so the shifters match direction. L/h alpha lowers , the rear gear is the forward gear, which is the reverse gear in r/h alpha's, thus requiring different cable action. jt |
thanks jt . . .
|
Answer your phone:D
And TTT for anyone else that can help My friend did not have counter rotating drives in stock. |
I have a 86 alpha one L/H rotation Ill trade for a R/H rotation

Paul
Call me @ 512-848-1951 Ive got one to trade. |
glassdave,
I switched alpha's to c/r. PM me if you like |
I have just bought a set of Alpha drives. One is supposed to be a CR unit but is not marked. With the shift tab in the straight position, they both turn in the same direction. I may have gotten screwed. Jt mentioned that the cables must be switched. If so I might have one CR unit. Should I split the upper and lower and start there?
|
thanks for all the info guys.
sutphil - i will contact you. i would definetly like to discuss this with someone that has been through it. scott- i'll get ahold of you or see ya at the poker run. BahaRunner- you weasel :p :p  :D . . start yer own damn thread . . . :D |
Did you do it?
Glassdave,
Did you convert your Alpha to CCW? I am considering doing this on my twin 260s and would be interested in how it worked and how it affected performance/handling/docking/etc. Thanks, Rich |
More info.... I am going to open up my Alpha ss drives to replace seals and check gears anyway this winter so, if there is info out there on how to convert to CCW rot.
PLEASE post it or PM me.... anything!!!! Thanks |
