Oil Pressure Gauge off the scale??

Yesterday when we came off the lake I noticed my Oil pressure gauge was off the scale on the high side of the readings. Would this be a ground or a sending unit problem?? I did remove the dash and check for a loose connection but turned up nothing. Any ideas??

Thanks

Most likely sending unit shorted out. Thus the gauges stuck on high side.

Does the gauge go all the way to top when the key is turned on with out starting the engine?

Yes it does. Where is the sending unit located??? Is that the large unit on the back side of the engine near the dist??

The sending unit is a small round canister about 2" in diameter and 2" deep that screws into a fitting on the block. Not sure if they are all located in the same place on all engines, but mine is just below and behind the #7 spark plug. Mine was doing the same thing and it was the sender. 15 minute job to change it.
