oil consumption

If I use the recommended SAE-30, it uses 1 qt every 10 or so hrs. If I switch to 10-40 I hardly have add any at all. The engine is a 460 with 250 hours and no external leaks. I don't see any oil on the transom. Normal usage of oil? Would it hurt to keep the 10-40 in it?

Go for it...

The 10w40 should work fine. Change any multi-weight oil sooner than you would a single weight oil though. The viscosity improver's of a multi-weight will break down with high engine temps while a single weight will not have any viscosity improver's.
Sincerely
Dennis Moore
