Trim gauge problems!
I'm having problems with the trim sender on my alpha one. I got it adjusted and it was working fine in my driveway. I took the boat out this weekend, and just happened to be watching as I was idling out. It worked okay for the first 3-5 minutes. I trimmed the drive all the way in got on plane and trimmed back out a bit. I checked the gauge, and watched it start moving on it's own until it was pegged at down. A little bit later I looked down to see it pegged the other way. I replaced the sensor about two years ago. any ideas what could be going on with this thing/

Water could've gotten in causing a short to ground.
Is your gimbal tilt bushings in good shape with no play? If they're worn allowing the gimbal to move, like mine, it'll cause erratic readings or destroy the sensor internally, like mine. :( |
make sure the bolt is not rotating behind it
ckeck for torque. they do strip out. the solution is a helicoil kit if it wond hold the proper torque i did mine. same problem. get everything dialed in, one time out, and everything is reading wrong again. bolt was rotating when trimming. |
The strange thing is that I actually watched the gauge move when I wasn't touching the trim (touching trim:D ). That makes me think it's getting wet and shorting out somewhere.

I also have an Alpha 1 with a shot trim gauge. A friend said that when he greased his, the grease filled up the sending unit, shorting it out. After he cleaned it out it worked fine. Just remove them both before you grease the gimball.

Buy mechanicals and be done with it. I has so many problems with those damn things that I gave up on them and went Mechanical. They are NOT cheap to replace and after you replace them twice you are at the same price of a Mech. set up.

Hey Jon,
Your PM is full. Where did you get your mechanical trim senders? Thanks. |
(touching trim :D ). Mine (trim indicators, that is) have started doing the same. On mine, the grey, annular toothy thing (sorry) was broken. haven't replaced it yet cause I can trim by ear. |
