popped out of gear
 

need help,1991 260 baja i was out over the weekend and was leaving the beach, coming on plane it popped out of gear & spun up the rpm, after that i had no reverse or forward? prop spins free. 500hp bravo 1

It don sound Too good to me.

Sounds like you either "popped" your outdrive or and engine coupler:(
You can start the engine and check down the back of the bell housing to see if the shaft( that goes to the drive) is turning. If it isn't you broke the coupler.
In either case it don't sound good.

After it happened did you smell a burnt rubber smell??

Likely took out the splines in the coupler...no burnt rubber smell there , just a slight THUMP then higher rpms and usually just getting on plane when the load is the greatest.

Just happened to my brother... went from fwd idle through neutral into reverse...except reverse was'nt there anymore,neither was fwd. Coupler splines disintegrated.No boating for my 2 week holiday.. hope to have boat in water again on friday.Refer to mopower's first response !

thanks for your help everyone. its going into the shop tomorrow, tonight i will check the shaft. has anyone been through this & how much can i expect $$ and how long.:)

talk about coincidence...
same thing happened to me this afternoon. Took the Kid's out for a spin(to the other side of the lake of course). Just as we were about to plane out, boom! and the engine raced.
I thought we hit a stump, but checked everything I could as we were stranded and found nothing...no leaks, no prop or skeg nicks...nada.
No I read this and it sounds identical.

Is there a brand or make of the coupler that will last longer?
Is there anything else that could be done as long as the engine is out...gaskets or other parts that may be worn or just periodically go out AND require the engine to be removed.

How many hours you guys got on your couplers? Are they greased during regular maintenance? Just curious I replaced mine before this year started. Mine had 450hrs on it but the splines were sharp and engine was out so I replaced it. I did not think it would last the summer.

tech: If everything else is good - no oil leaks etc, I would just pull and replace the coupler. Check your alignment when it goes back in.
