Anyone change a gen 5 cam?
When I took the timing cover off, the oil pan gasket stuck to the cover and tore. It has a 1 piece oil pan gasket that goes all around. Is there an easy fix for this? No one shows a separate gasket in their catalogs.

Take a little sand paper and sand the pan and cover and use GMS black sealer let it set overnight start it up warm it up let it set a hour or two. You should be good to go also clean the parts with brake clean or paint thinner.

I've been able to change the cams in mine by loosening all the oil pan bolts...especially towards the front, and dropping the front of the pan down a bit, then the timing chain cover will pull out without damaging anything. The oil pan gasket on the Gen V and VI is normally reusable....although I don't know if yours is anymore. I did damage one once and was able to get a new one at my local parts store for about $32.00. Actually I was surprised they had one in stock...I was afraid it was gonna be one of those overpriced dealer only items. Good luck....Glenn

You're able to loosen all of the oil pan bolts on a boat motor in the boat?!! I must be getting old or something. Not as flexible as I used to be.

I guess I should've said it was in the boat. It was also glued on with a ton of silicone.

I have a GenIV and Chevrolet is the only one who makes that gasket that I found.

You do mean that you tore the actual pan gasket, Right??? Not the bottom rubber gasket at the bottom of the timing cover???
I changed the cam on a Gen V w/o pulling the engine. It was quite the task in a 24 Outlaw. Lossened the front 3 or so bolts on the pan to get the timing cover on and off. |
The oil pan gasket goes across the timing cover. There is no seperate gasket at the front under the timing cover. I put the torn pieces on the timing cover with a lot of silcone. 1 engine is ok, 1 is leaking. Guess I know what I'll be doing tomorrow.
The good news is both engines are running smoothly with their new Crane 651 cams. |
