Changing ignitions
Will I gain anything by changing from a mallory pointless ignition to a Thunderbolt IV ignition. My engine is a 468 9.5 to1 , large oval port heads, rpm air gap and 850 holley, 555/575 231/239 ultradyne cam. The ignition is on a stock 310 hp 454 that was left in my garage and the guy never came to get it this is over a year ago. I swapped engines for him and have not heard from him in 10 months. (Still owes me money and now storage fee)I am considering selling it(How much would it be worth?) as it is complete except for pulleys and a dipstick or tearing it down and making a duplicate of the engine that is in my boat as of now. It is just in the way. If I keep it what suggestions on preserving it I have oiled down the cylinders and it was winterized. Thanks

If the curve is similar, initial and total timing is the same, and you're not fouling plugs now, you probably wont notice any difference at all.

It is a better ignition system and will be more powerful and more reliable but it won't change your boats performance.

I'm assuming your Mallory distributor
has mechanical advance. TB IV's have no mechanical advance mechanisim, thus less moving parts to possibly rust up and not move. Is it going to make any perfeormance difference: see Gary's and Dennis's answers. |
I just did not know if there is a benefit. Is there a rev limiter in this set up?

To the best of my knowledge,
TB IV's don't have a rev limiter in the module, I believe there is an additional rev limiter module used on some of the HP engines that used TBIV. jt |
If you have a Unilite, I know that years ago the advance mechanism would loosen up, caused me a number of major problems. I like no moving parts.

Thanks I think I will change it as it is of no use to me on the motor in the garage.

Maybe someone on the board has a module with a more desirable advance curve than the 310 module you've got. Check with Dennis Moore as to which one he'd recommend.
