What sensors will shut you down?
I have a '97 Baja Outlaw w/ a 454 that I lost oil pressure on.
I fix it and now I have 40psi, however once I come on plane it shuts down. I have ran it at idle for a least 30 min. however under load I have a problem. Any thoughts? Also why are there 2 coolant sensors and 2 oil pressure sensors? - (suspect for problem) I broke one of my coolant ones while changing manifolds and it didn't seem to matter at all. I've put on allot of hours with just the one. |
The 2 wire coolant sensor is for the
ECM, the oil pressure switch is for the ECM, the ECM controls the alarm circuit, as well as shut down. The other senders are for the gauges. Is the alarm going off when it shuts down ? (I am assuming you have an EFI engine, carbed engine, all that can be "shut down" is the spark advance curve, due to the knock sensor being tripped, thunderbolt V ignition. ) |
We had a faulty alarm, and a bad sensor!!!!!!!!!
The oil press. sender was the bad one, I found out you can just disconnect it and run, in case it were to go bad on the water. Maybe I'll make my poker run in my own boat after all:D jt29 I have a carburated engine, so I don't think there is an ECM, is there? Thanks for the help |
A carbureted engine will have a sensor for the oil pressure alarm and the oil pressure gauge and a water temp sensor for the high temp alarm and the water temp gauge. None of these sensors will shut down the engine. Cutting out at high rpm is probably a clogged fuel filter. Check the filter inside the carburetor (on the Quadrajet).

what was your oil pressure problem
|
seahawk see post "compression test"
If that sender will not shut down my engine I don't know what the hell my problem is. I can idle no problem, once through the no wake zone I throttle up and just as I come onto plane it shut down and wouldn't re-start. I can see fuel down the Holly, W.T.F. is going on!?! Once I get it back to the shop it fires up no problem!!!!!! |
Have you checked for spark after it dies ?
|
Were going to disconnect the bad sender this afternoon and give her hell. If it dies I'll check spark.
We had a problem with vapor lock in the past, but it wouldn't happen this quick. I'm supposed to be heading for the Mississippi right about now but..... Looks like it might be a jetboat river trip if we don't figure this out by tonight:confused: |
Like Dennis mentioned, there's no
sensor on a carbed engine that's going to "shut it down". It won't start right back up after it "shuts down" ? jt |
NOPE
We are going to check spark on the water once it shuts down, if that's not it I don't know what it could be. Like I said earlier I've had a problem with vapor lock but that was taken care of. I will check my fuel filter but we had gas when pumping, maybe not enough to sustain higher rpm's? I'll let you know tuesday when I get back to work. |
Bad coil?

Possible loose wire!
Could you possibly have a loose connection at the distributor and or a loose connection at the wire harness plug. Shake the wires around while under way to see if that is a possibility. Also on some Mercs they have a second plug in connection from the distributor that gets corroded. When it gets corroded it shorts out comes on and off and is hard to find. Clean all your contacts here.
Post your findings. Thanks Brian |

Fuel delivery problem.
Put in a new pump, filter, and feed lines, all fittings above bilge are now threaded not barbed and clamped. Ran about 10 min. in poker run and then blue smoke filled the cockpit. Next project: ENGINE REMOVAL |
wowchad,
Sorry to hear about your troubles. I saw your boat parked on the trailer by the ramp, but I didn't know it was yours. In fact I didn't even know you where there untill I talked to Thirsty turtle(Bruce) the next day. Sorry I missed you. Brina |
Yeah Brian I don't miss many trips to the river. Even floating down stream puts a smile on my face:)
I still had a great time only running the last half, the only bummer were those trains all night 25' from our tents. We were up and out of there by 8:30. Next year, once you have the dates, were going to reserve the "POINT". You can even leave your boats in the water right there and it's cool to watch all the boats roll in. Were going to Prairie Du Chein the weekend after labor day if I can get this alternator working in the Jet:) |

Bruce where are you staying? Or are you only running down for the day?
I have a small group of jetboaters that stay in a hotel on the IA side, right by the marina there. We are going to camp on the river, weather permitting, about 3 miles south of Prairie on the west side of the river. You can't miss all the little boats that'll be hanging out there and it's right on the channel. The Island we'll be at is straight across from Wyalusing State Park. We'll have the kiddies but stop by and say hi if you get the chance, or honk as you go by. BTW what did MNHowardCat pick up in Chicago? I didn't get a chance to meet him. |
Don got himself a Sugar Sand jet off Ebay while they settle on his claim. He was riding in the 30 Eliminator on the Poker Run.
I'm not sure of the hotel name we'll be at. I think it's on the WI. side and the marina is in the backwaters.....there's a towboat dry docked somewhere nearby?? We'll be looking for you guys:) Bruce |
