Serviced my engine today and found a problem.

Went through the boat today getting ready for the trip up to LOTO this next weekend. Got done doing everything and headed up to the car wash to pressure wash out the bilge and clean up my mess a little. While pressure washing out the bilge I moved the washer hose and saw something move out of the corner of my eye. The hose had moved across the top of the shifter bracket that mounts to the starboard riser. After a closer look I found that ALL three nuts and washers that hold this bracket onto the stud had fallen off. The bracket was just magically staying on there by chance. I was lucky enough to not have the spacers fall off too.

Here's my question.....does anyone know if these nuts are metric or standard? It will be a very easy fix if I can find the right parts. Just want a little head start before I go on a wild goose chase.

Guess it's a good thing I found it now before leaving on the trip.

Thanks all.

Buck

I`m pretty sure they are just plain old 1/4x20 stainless nuts

Good catch. Why don't you just put on some stainless nylock nuts and you will never have to worry about them falling off again.

I recently did a few upgrades to my engine. I decided to replace a few "critical" fasteners with stainless steel nylok nuts. I did replace these same fasteners you are speaking of. On my 1998 454, the nuts were 1/4-20. Yes, just plain ol 1/4" coarse thread. I found a little hardware store that had plenty of nylok nuts, all sizes, in stainless.
I now have peace of mind.:D

Thanks all!!! I was hoping they were standard thread. The local hardware store stocks stainless hardware. They stock metric hardware. But the don't stock metric stainless hardware.

Whew!

Nylocks it is!!!

Thanks for the quick responses all!!!!
