sea pump impeller?
Storm kicking up, white caps,3-4 footers the boat loved it.....!!! crusing around 55mph ... having a blast, went about 5 miles and i heard the exhaust get a bit louder, backed off -opened the hatch, mech temp guage on the starboard motor at 200* (they normally run cold at around 140 or less) shut the motor down and limped the rest of the way home..... my question is would the impeller go this quickly??? back at the dock i closed the sea cock- hooked up the fresh water flush, and water never came out the tips... seemed as if it built up presure , .... i pull the screens on the sea strainers --clean........ Any help would be greatly appreciated.... my sea pumps are crank mounted jabsco's

Gettin the impeller out to verify is a pretty simple job usually.

yes usually, lol ,not in this case... i just thought impellers went slowly ...... but thx

A damaged impeller seems like the only logical answer. Can they go that quickly? Yes, I just replaced mine this morning. It only had 20 hrs on it........

Some debris shaved the blades off my impeller and it would overheat at RPMs less than 2500. You may have to throughly flush this engine to get all the rubber out of it too.

Best place to check is at the water arrival at the oil cooler they usually will stick there. Kanookstr told me this and he was dead on.

XCAV8,
If you snag a plastic bag or something you can eat up an impeller pretty quick. Now there's an argument for water pressure guages in all boats. I gottem and love them. Saved my a$$ (or should I say impellers)more than once. You see the water pres. drop first , then the temp. starts to rise. Stop , backup and go again and watch the pressure come up and the temp go back down. And GLH is right ...most impeller parts stop at the oil cooler. If you can get to it to pull the hose of there , when you have the pump apart back flush it from the t-stat housing back to the pump. Has always worked for me. |
Be sure to pull the cooler off and look thru the tubes with a flashlight too....I found more chunks of impeller inside mine and used a coat hanger to push them back out of the small tubes where they were causing a blockage....then I backflushed more pieces out of the hose that goes from the impeller to the cooler....
