Redline Engine Oil
I changed from Mercury 20W40 to Redline Full Synthetic 10W40. Was this a wise choice? Did I get the right weight oil?
I assume this is really good oil at $9.50 a quart. |
It is a really high quality oil and will work great. The 10W40 should be fine.
Redline $9.50 a quart x 8 quarts = $84.00 Change oil every 50 hours? Do you think the extra expense is worth the higher quality? I will gladly pour it into a customers boat if he doesn't mind the extra expense. I have been a mechanic for thirty years and have yet to see an engine failure due to poor quality oil. No oil, dirty oil, and water in the oil, has taken many engines, but never poor quality oil. Theoretically it is superior but I don't see a difference in engine longevity between oils on my own high mileage vehicles. My latest ride is a Dodge Dakota, 218,000 miles, same compression as when new, 30 W Valvoline petroleum based oil @ $1.25 a quart. I personally believe that it is not necessary to spend the extra money. Sincerely Dennis Moore |
Is it to late to go back to Mercury 20W40? Any damage from this?

Red line Oil
Hey Bikinilover...
I switched to redline 10/40... Oil temp dropped down 20 degrees. Motor runs 220 and never goes over 240 after some hard runs. I am sold on red line. Was running dino oil and temp used to climb quickly. 540/600 hp sheikman |
I don't have an oil temp gage so I don't know if it dropped or not. Was hoping to get some more RPMs out of it but nothing changed.
|
For the past 8 years I've run RedLine Race str 50wt. This year I changed to Mobil 1 15W-50. The oil temps are 20 degrees higher with the mobil. I also notice that the oil pressure is also higher over the entire temp range. That was a total surprise since I expected the str 50 to be higher across the board.
