did you check the cables? may have a snaped shift cable.....or worse yet there may be something wrong internally.......give us more info....
does it run in reverse?
can you shift it into neutral and not forward?
how did you notice this? just happened while underway or you come to the boat one day and all you get is this?

Wally, I was cruising in the wakeless zone around 900 rpm and went to put the boat in gear and it stuck in reverse, didnt force it, it is still stuck. It is in gear and working but wont allow me to put in neutral or forward.

Check your shift linkage. All the way from the throttles back to the drive. If that's not it and the shifters dont move, it may be the clutch is jammed onto one of the gears in the upper.

The drive needs to be turning when you shift it. It is possible the cone clutch is stuck in the gear or you may have linkage problems. If you can turn the engine over without starting it, (bypass the safety neutral switch or use a clip lead to hit the start relay, pull the coil lead or what ever it takes to keep it from starting) and try to shift the drive at the cable transistion block in the engine compartment. Be very careful to not get wound up in the motor while doing this, Safety, Safety, Safety!

If that doesnt do it, drain the drive and pull the back cap off. You will see the shift linkage where the detent ball sits against it. It will be to the right or left, depending on the rotation of the drive. Make sure the parts are all there and not broken. Moving the shift shaft with the lever that is attached to the cable will accuate cams the will move the shift fork up or down and move the cone clutch from one gear to neutral to the other.
I hope this makes sense?? It will once you look at it. If the clutch is stuck, the upper will need to be taken apart. Special tools, etc.

Hope this helps.

Dick
