cubes or blowers ???

what is the the deal a freind is trying to decide,
big cubes to acheice 650+ hp or blowers on 502's ??
hmmmmm...
your thoughts
he asked me i didnt know

puder 08-20-2003 02:33 AM

no replacment for displacement.......

BUT i was on a 42' tiger that had merc sc575s that were mildly modified up to about 650hp. They ran smooth as silk. Efi blowers are a VERY trick setup.

i'd think blown 502 would also be cheaper than a 540 or 572. Hell buy a crate 502/502 and slap a blower on it. A b&m250 with mild boost will make 650. My 461 with a small 174 blower (454 30over) will make 600 with a pulley change. WIteht 3-4 pulley it smakes 550.

what about reliable and turnkey??
your thoughts

cougarman 08-20-2003 08:34 AM

Hmmm.

I would think a 572ci just doin its thing making
700 hp would be more reliable in the long run.

Vs.

a 502 with a huffer and a puffer sitting on top
Sqeaking the same power out.
Anytime your into the Boost your wearing parts
out. Radical cams and head work etc.

Downside is the Big swing on the talldecks
hits your wallet pretty good on your initial
investment. But I feel it will pay back in the
long run.

Hmmmmm:D :D :D :D
Just Do it. :D :D

I would have to say a blower they are reliable and for the $ the most bang for the buck so to speck
but that is just an opion.

The cam is a Crane 292 on the 572ci with 9.1 compression.

Making 700hp.

502 with blower. A well setup blower will last as long, maybe longer as a big cube with same HP. When you tear up a big cube plan on spending big $ & time to get it repaired. 502 parts are off the shelf. Remember setup is the trick. Most people that you hear badmonth blowers had a bad setup.

i've heard afew engine biulders mention they dont liek to biuld stuff with these giant stroke becaue it creates wierd rod angle geometry.

one CA biulder sis poek with actully for turbo motors like de-stroked engine. Tka ea tall decka nd run a short stroke cam with low cpmression pistons and liek 25 psi of boost froma turbo charger. Becasu eof eth shortstroke he claimed you could easily (and safely) spin them faster. like 6500rpm with no prob.

..........that's easy for you to say!

Go with the blowers if your engine is built for them: means correct compression for the boost, the correct cam and valves, good exhaust, properly set-up carbs. My engines are "out of boost" 95% of the time and I've had 65 trouble-free hours so far.

I may be wrong, but I believe the wierd rod
angle/ geometry is on the standard decks once you
start going past 540ci.

And that would be the reason for going to Tall Decks.

--------------------------------------------------------------

As far as blowers, I agree that set up properly
they can run for a long time. Hard to argue
boost isn't wearing things out. And once your
into the boost forget the fuel cause it's going
fast.

I like the simplicity of a 572ci and set up properly
they will run a long time as well.
Also like the never ending Torque made with a tall
deck.

Basically depends what each guy is into.

I was talking with Nauti Kitty and he was on a
47' Apache this past weekend.
Triple 572ci. 700hp. each 13 people on
board running 80mph. :D :D :D
Fresh water

Sounds like a good time.
