Thanks for the all the info guy's. It is greatly appreciated. A good local machine shop has a serti valve machine, and they do porting. What is all involved with pocket porting; just around the ports into the valve seats and then clean up the ruff spots in the chamber.
A cool thing is that it turns out, I know the shop manager and he told me that he had everything and would help me do them after hours in his garage. You don't find that very often.
I'm not cheap, but $5 X 8 adds up rather quick.
Do you think the rollers are at the end of their life span. I will check them and replace even if they still check good, if you think they won't last much longer. $500?
From what I have researched, the feria vavles are maybe a little better than the manley, any thoughts on that. Or are they the same manufacturer.
Ok, let's say I change the cam, port the heads and put on exhaust, what hp do you think this will produce and will it last a lot of hours before I rebuild the whole engine?
Since I am changing the exhaust valves, is there any advantage or disadvantage to getting the bigger 1.900 or 1.940 valves?
Cord, I agree on checking the injectors. I need to find a shop around that can flow test them for me.
Enough for now, but I have more questions.

Thanks for the pricing Budah.

As far as the Hp number I would guess around 650-675 if you put a cam in it.

I'm using FelPro 17048 head gaskets in my 509's.

28Eliminator 08-28-2003 08:19 PM

What is the difference in the 1047 & the 17048?
They both state marine. Is one for gen IV and one for gen V & VI?
Anyone,
Jack, I'll call tomorow

TomR 08-28-2003 08:56 PM

The question is, why does it say 1047 on the package and the gasket has 17048 stamped into it??

Manley Inconel #11587 same as Merc HP uses:$239.60 @ Competition Products 1-800-233-0199. Great guys and they have a good relationship with Merc Hi-Perf and they really know their stuff on clearances set-up ,etc. for marine. They are out of Oshgosh WI. And no I don't work for 'em. BTW-$239.60 for the inconel valves is better by 35% over the best price quoted. Chuck

All right TomR, that expains somethings. But why do they list both part numbers.
MAG502NUM, That is a great price. Thanks

Bigwavz, Do you have a supercharger and fuel injection?
What cam did you go with? What were your gains with the modifications?

28Eliminator,

Here's what I did for my 502mpi/whipple on a 27' Fountain:
Fel Pro 17048
Manley 11562 Intakes (2.25")
Ferria F2120P Inconel exhausts
Crane 99822 valve seals
Comp 929-16 springs
Crane 99961-16 retainers
Crane 99098-1 keepers
ARP RRS-6H rocker studs
GM 3860038 guide plates
Crane 13750-16 roller rockers
Manley 25818 pushrods
Manley 25855 Pushrods
ARP 135-3706 Head bolts.
I had Teague install bronze valve guides, deck heads, valve job, machine for pc seals. All parts purchased from Teague Custom Marine. In addition, I put on a CMI exhaust with Teague switchable tips (no more thru prop). Lastly, a Teague Platinum XR upgrade on the outdrive. The boat runs 84-85 gps.
