Small block and Big block kits

I just took my '70 Z-28 out for a ride. I used a rotating 383 assembly from this company, good prices, service and everything matched up perfect. I used a comp xe-274 redline 6500. It pulls real hard every gear(T-56). Would this cam be too much for the 460 in my boat? Too much duration? Stock exhaust now maybe headers?http://www.enginekits.com/

That camshaft has approximately 230/236 degrees of intake/exhaust duration @ .050 check. Although some people would choose it for a 460 Ford, and it would work fine at approximately 5,600 rpm with a 10.0:1 compression ratio, you should seriously consider a smaller camshaft that would make maximum power at 5,000 rpm with a 9.0:1 compression ratio.

The crankshaft bearings in a 460 Ford are huge (3 inches in diameter), creating a lot of heat at high rpm. Turning the engine a little slower will extend the life of the crankshaft and bearings considerably.

The stock 460 cam has 216/220 degrees of intake/exhaust duration @ .050. Would I be better off just putting bolt-ons on? The ex-268 has 218/224 figures. This doesn't seem like it would do much more for me. What about intake/carb/exhaust upgrades first. Then look at cams.

Your pretty limited on exhaust manifolds, not much out there except for log style manifolds. Aftermarket center riser Big Block Chevy manifolds fit if you use adapters but then you can't change the spark plugs without removing the manifolds. Headers are probably your only real option.

An Offy or Holley tunnel ram with twin 450 cfm Holley marine carbs (vacuum secondaries) would be a good choice for the mild stock camshaft. It is about the only decent intake manifold for a marine 460 Ford running at 5000 rpm.

Sincerely
Dennis Moore

Thanks for the info. Lots of choices for me to ponder.
