How much power will I need to go 80?
My brother is looking a a Baja 24 outlaw and wants to go 80 (eventually). Anyone have any Idea how much power that may take? Any experienced outlaw hot rodders out there? Thanks Greg

I ran the numbers you need to run a 27p prop at 5400 rpms with 13% slip to run 80mph.
with a 25p prop you need to run 5800 rpms. Your going to need about 600 hp to do it. I have a 97 24ft outlaw it has an upgraded hp500 engine at 5400 rpms it runs 73mph with a reworked 23p mirage plus prop. This is not the most effiecient hull to start with and I am currently having it blueprinted. I hope to pick up 1.5mph when its done. As a measure of safety you should upgrade the drive components and install hydraulic steering! Good luck with your project!!!!! |
2700, Thanks for your input. Ive blueprinted 2 boats and seen good results. Definatly let me know what happens. I might do my Eliminator next. Thanks Greg

Back in 97 we ran 79.37 mph over the kilo run on lake windermere, gaining a class record (national) in a 26 foot mono (1800kg) with a slightly worked 502 EFI (cam, roller rockers, gill/merc ali manifolds, moded throttle body & fuel system) which we reckon made a genuine 460hp, or about 60hp over what we reckon the stock motor really made!
1.36:1 B1 drive with cav plate 4" above bottom of boat, turning a mirage 25 with a little extra pitch (1/2" or so) and a spot more cup. did entire run just touching the 5150 limiter occasionaly. about 10-11% slip I wouldn't think you would need 600hp unless they're very small horses:) 26 footer by Exteme marine, poole England. |
I'd get a better boat & that 600 hp and go 85+!
A B28 mannerfelt with 600hp would be doing closer to the 100! |
speed
Jon, I ran your numbers and your right at 10% slip with the 1:36 drive you would be doing 80 MPH IN YOUR BOAT!
This hull design has been out about 15 years and its a good rough water boat, heavy about 4500lbs, but its does have stand up bolsters. It is not a very effecient hull and there are hulls out there like Eliminator or Nordic that will do 80 mph in a 25 ft vee with a stock 502. That has nothing to do with this hull! |
Hey Leviathan,
Maybe I should sell my sub par boat also ! After all why waste my money on this tub when I could just buy a better one ! Sure I would love to have a nice new 42 GTX with some big Sterling power BUT some people (myself) can't afford that unless maybe your footing the bill !! HPjunkie, You might need a bit more than 600hp. My boat has a similar hull to yours and has run a best of 81. My power is a N/A 540 9:1 CR , Sterling ported Merlin Ovals, Brodix intake, big solid roller, 1050 and CMI's. I would guess this motor is somewhere between 650 to 675. Although I was disappointed today , the best I could get was 78 ! |

Scarab 26 I could not agree with you more. I am orginally from Michigan and used to boat on Lake St Claire. Id like to see that 26ft mono hull of his do 80 on a Sunday afternoon out near Gull Island when one of those 1000ft freighters cruises by. By the time they find the pieces it will be in Muscamoot Bay!!!!

Sorry guys, didn't mean to offend anyone, but puting together a 600-700hp motor can't be cheap, and then you gotta run it, a more efficient boat could be cheaper in the long run.
baja2700, with the greatest respect to you and your boat, as a racer/powerboater in the UK, where sea conditions are generally less the nice, I think you should see what happens to the mass produced leasure boats such as baja, htm, donzi etc when they've been used in anger over here in our waters before you assume one of our custom builders boats would fall appart! I would welcome you anytime to run in our Cowes-Torquay-Cowes race with your Baja, and would not grin in the slightest when it was taken home in a basket. As a general rule, you won't find the flimsey light weight, ultra quick boats, which I assume you think the Extreme 26 must be, being made in the UK, as they really wouldn't last five mins. Being resonably efficient doesn't automatically mean it will be an 'egg carton' in the structures department! And again, with the greatest respect, I think a 24' sports boat that requires in excess of 600hp to do 80mph must have a lot more wrong than just being heavy! Like I said, 650hp aint gonna be cheap, to build, or run, why not just try a more efficient hull. (now putting on flack jacket and retireing to garden shed) P.S. why all this talk about money, and me footing the bill? I never suggested you spend MORE money, and I certainly haven't got any spare. I just said spend what you have on a boat that does 80 with sensible power, as doing 80mph is YOUR requirement. |
I have a 24 Outlaw with 550 hp that runs 75 on GPS in perfect conditions. I can guarantee you that you will need at least 650 hp to go 80. This hull is not a fast one but it handles very well. I'd look at no less than a 540 for N/A option or you could go with a mild 502 at 450 hp then put a Whipplecharger on it. The acceleration with the blower is addicting !!! Hope you have deep pockets for this project regardless of what engine you go with.
Also it is mandatory to upgrade to full hydraulic steering setup. |

Baja2700,
I hear you on those big frieghter rollers in the channel:eek: Who is blueprinting your hull ? I'm also considering having that done. Jon, Sure it takes a lot of power to get these hulls going BUT they are pleasure boats, not purpose built race boats. Another factor is the boats being pleasure built they have low "x" dims so that the avereage consumer can load up the boat with 10 people, 4 coolers , and a dog and be able to get the thing on plane. Plus driving them is pretty much a no brainer. I know what my boat needs , an extension box and a 2" shorter lower and I'm positiv the boat would run 85. I'm just not going to spend that kind of money. I will blueprint the bottom and hopefully pick up a couple. |
HP Junkie
Hey Greg,
I have justed dropped a HP 500 in 97 24 Outlaw. I have swopped Cams, little head work & to do 80 you will definately need atleast 650Hp. With a 500Hp motor ,low 70's. They do ride real well in rough water for 24 boat , but the hull is not efficient for speed purposes. Mine is for sale as I want a faster boat. A blower has to be squeezed in there. Later John |
Leviathan,
In your defense, some of us "Yanks" tend to be a little sensitive when it comes to our boats. It took me years ( and money) to realize the difference between good boats and better boats. Most of the time a good boat will suffice on some of our inland waters. The sea waters you guys run in would destroy most anything not produced with The Great Lakes or Ocean running in mind. It's good to hear from the "other side" once in a while. Personally, I find the Performance RIB's you guys run around out in the ocean fascinating. Can you point me to some websites that feature that kind of stuff and also some racing websites from your part of the world. Thanks, Russ Withiam |
Russ, thanks for that:) I really meant no offence to any OSO members, it's just amazing that one of those baja's needs so much grunt to get it going! 650hp is a real large number over here (for pleasure boating, albeit High perf), one of the 28 batboats with that power would be really something, assuming it was built correctly (there has been a few probs with the various builders of these awsome design boats(on both sides of the atlantic), they really do rock when it gets sloppy out there!
If you're interested in the european/british ribs, or european/british boat/ing generaly, visit my website, and have a look at the 'links' page, in particular, revenger ribs, and Mark Pascoe ltd (sport ribs) who also builds the V24 batboat this side of the pond. see ya. www.boatmad.com |

Scarab 26...I have a local firm, Desert Marine that blueprinted the hull. I took it out today for the first time in 3 weeks-it ran 74.3 on GPS 35 gallons of fuel 103 degree heat 2 on board.(Its Phoenix anything less than 110 is brisk). At this point I'm all done. We have a 27ft Fountain that we are building the same engine that is in the Baja. The Fountain runs 68 mph on GPS with 30 gallons and 2 on board. This boat has a stock 502. With 515 hp it should run near 80. I'll keep you posted.

Years ago I had a 24 Outlaw with 502cu whipplecharged and the boat runs 75mph. You need
650hp or more! good luck |
Whats the big deal. Its cheaper to build the motor to 600 hp than to buy a new boat. Any way with that much hp it will look and sound real cool at the dock. Theres a 25 eliminater cat in my area with a 1000 hp it gets alot of looks at the dock because of the motor sticking out, but guess what ,when the winds blowing my S3 with 370s is all over that cat. If you like the boat do what you have to do to get it to move.

Many good points of opinion here, but if you go back to the top and read the original post, this chap hasn't yet bought the baja 24, he looking at one, If he wants an 80 mph boat, it would just be much easier to choose one with a more efficient hull, then with that 650hp that everyone says is 'normal' he could go 90!
My point is simply to buy a boat that does what he wants in the begining. The 24 may be a good rough water boat for it's size, but with 650hp he could be doing that 80mph in a 28, or 30 footer, and I know which i'd wanna be in when it gets nasty on the water. my $0.02 |
600hp IS needed
I support all the info you 24 Outlaw guys are throwing out there. I built a 600hp 540 cu. in hoping to hit 82-84 as all the speed formula calculations indicated in this boat. I still need some tuning, BUT...75mph is where it is running. This was dynoed at 585hp with no accessories and good headers. Now throw on the extras, account for the drive parasitics, and the more restrictive exhaust, and you've got a little more than a HP500 at the prop (470hp). I figure about 50hp more than a HP500 model 24 Outlaw. That correlates with all the 24's that run 72 with a 500hp. I run 75. Numbers seem to jive to me. And sure, drop that motor in a more efficient hull, it would be faster. But, I was @ LOTO this year for the 4th of July and was VERY impressed with the way my boat performed. I was always told AND assumed 24 foot would be too small when the going got really rough. Not the case with this boat...
My $.02 Zack |
If your boat shopping and you want to go 80 look else ware. Pretty simple to me. I have no idea why some of you are getting worked up.
|
:)
|
I thought he had the boat already. This is simple. Buy a boat thats already set up to run 80.
