repower: 496 HO or 502 Mag

Hi I am helping a frined repower his 22 Velocity, he had blown his 320 EFI / Alpha SS combo, and is now going to a bravo and has the option of a rebuilt 502 Mag and a 50hr 496 HO. The engine builder says the 502 is the better motor..........what is the common thought?

Thanks for any help

IMO- If you keep it stock, go with the 496. Same HP, but a little more torque down low.
If you are going to modify, definitly the 502!

496HO without a doubt. The single biggest plus is the closed loop cooling but there are many other great things.

1. no distributor or rotor to mess with (each cyl has it's own coil and the crank position is fed from a sensor)
2. Oil changes are MUCH easier thanks to the pull out hose via the garbord (sp?) plug.
3. The PCM555 computer can feed SmartCraft info to any number of gages for more control than you can get from standard analogs (add-on SC1000 or 5000 computers)
4. Better horsepower and torque and ectremely reliable.
5. No saltwater at the exhaust/manifold riser like the 502 which notoriously rusts and creates problems.
6. Fresh water cooling in the block!
7. Can get cableless shifters and throttles.

I'm sure I've missed some but that should help you decide.
