What are the pro's and con's ( power aside) of going with a 540 vs 572. Is there any advantages with the tall deck vs standard. Any block issues with going that big. How about some opinions ?

What no opinions ? Maybe I should ask a cam question ?

I am getting ready to build a 598 solid roller NA for my next project. Like any motor if it is built right it will deliver many hours of trouble free horsepower. How many hrs.? My motor will probably see new lifters and springs every 2 seasons or 50 hrs, whichever comes first and a complete going through at 200 hrs. For me that may very well be 5 or more seasons. The biggest downside to the larger motors is the fact that many short deck parts will not work. Things like the oil pan, distributor, intake manifold are to name a few. Hopefully more people will post their opinions, but as far as I am concerned go BIG!!!!

Doesn't anbody have Tall Decks?

572 is a square motor... 4.5bore, 4.5stroke.... these combinations of so called "square motors" are sometime said to be more reliable. It is only opinoin though I run a 540, and it lasts a whole season of extreme torture before rebuilds. I tear in down in the winter and go through it. A 572 could have more touque potential if built right. Hp doesn't make much difference.

I understand how the intake and the distributor would be a different size, what is the difference in the oil pans?

Stroke clearance!! Most pans will clear a 4.25" stroke max.

Tall deck lets you run a more favorable rod length/stroke ratio. Generally speaking, a longer rod will reduce piston side loading in the bore and will transmit more power into the crankshaft.
