Prop hubs?

Is it true that you shouldn't run a solid hub prop on an alpha drive?

Goodfella 01-09-2002 09:12 PM

How much HP?

PSYQUATIC 01-10-2002 10:57 AM

Around 325hp each.

i runa solid hub on my alpha with a mirage+

I always heard rubber hubs are good if you hit something, that way eth b=hubs breaks and not your drive. But that is true with any drive not just and alpha

A rubber hubbed propeller will not last with 325 Hp put on it. You need to run a solid hub propeller.

Due to the way the lower unit shifts on an Alpha (dog clutch - very abrupt engagement) the rubber or cushion hub is needed to absorb the shock during engagement. It is not so much a question of HP. The recent square bore Mercury props (Mirage +, Bravo 1)use plastic instead of rubber for less than 400 HP. After that a solid insert is reccomended.

As Goodfella says, the rubber hubs were not good for anything with any power.

Thanks for the info. I'll try for plastic hubs on my new props.
