K-Plane question

What would happen if I were to take K-plane's that were made for a twin engine boat and instead of mounting them high on the outside corners of the transom, I was to mount them closer to the drive and they would be lower on the transom. Would this be a bad idea. I have seen it done once on an F-1 fountain but do not remember what team it was. What effects do you think would happen?

I forgot to mention that this would be done on a single engine set-up.

You still have to take into consideration the degrees(?) the drive turns from left to right when mounting them. Thats why some tabs have the corners cut to clear the drive when turn fully. Personally on a pleasure boat i would leave them on the outside......its easier to balance the boat out if you have lots of people aboard and the boat lists to one side when the tabs are on the outside edges...think about it.

I've seen this setup on some velocities too. Might want to give velocitykendo a shout.

Thanks guy's I will, and just to clarify, this boat I am working on is a race boat so I am trying to get all I can out of it. Thanks for the info.

I have talked to a bunch of racers about this and they have all said get them as close to the middle as you can. No one really ever told me why but the best I can figure is when you are running WOT the boat is fairly high in the water. The tabs will be wet for longer mounted farther to the center line. You will also get less of a chance of over tabbing in a turn.

Yes, I have done this on a 251 Convinsor. Moving the tabs in as close to the drive as possible helped tremendously with the chine walk it previously had. As Audiofn said I think alot has to do with the fact that the tabs are in the water longer. I did not lose the ability to "Level" the boat. And I gained MPH because I can control the boat better. My 2cents
