Any performance gain with AMSOIL
 

Has anyone heard of a performance gain by switching to AMSOIL? I have heard that if you change your outdrive oil and Engine oil you can gain 100 rpms? TRUE/FALSE????

Another thing. Is it true when you switch to Synthetic, you cant switch back?

Any questions about oil on this site and you'll open a can 'o worms - here's my thoughts:

Lubricity of a synthetic may be a little bit better that petroleum, but not for long. The big enemy is contamination and synthetics contaminate just as fast as petroleum. The secret is to change your oil often. I change mine every 20 hours or so with 40W petroleum based oil. I've had no oiling problems or undue wear. I have money left over to buy beer.

As far as Amsoil goes, good stuff, just not necessary in my mind.

I have also heard that you may have less friction giving you some more rpm's. I run it in my motors just for insurance if they run hot the syn should hold up longer than regular oil. As far as the drives I'm happy running Merc High Perf.
Do a search on Synthetic drive oil and you may find some good info. Just be prepared to spend a looooong time reading. (subjects been covered to death). :)

Every chance I get. I've got a red 26' Thoroughbred with tan and gold stripes.

Ive got a 27 foot Baja Force that says "Danger Zone" down the side. It also has a radar arch.

If you do decide to use amsoil(which I use in both engine and drives)or any other brand of aftermarket oil in your outdrive, make sure you use a GL-4 rated gear oil, NOT GL-5, the phosphorous additive in the GL-5 will attack bronze, the same goes for your tow vehicle transmission(if it's a manual, that is) most have bronze synchronizers.

OK boathead, I run Amsoil in my PQ.. well only in the outdrive I use the series 2000 75w90 it works well is it the right stuff ??

The only advantages to synthetics are they take longer to break down (good for those not good about changing their oil frequently) and their heat tolerance is better. Other than that, if you change regularly it's a dead heat...

I sent you an Amsoil webpage of the GL-4 rated oil that I use, if you use a lot of their stuff, you can become a preferred customer for 20 bucks a year, saves a few bucks!!!

Well heres an update. I tried the oil and took the boat out yesterday....no gain whatsoever.

Oh well...at least I am running a good oil. Now I have to go slap my friend who guarenteed 100 rpms. It was worth a shot...not too expensive if it did work.
