Screw in rocker studs with Heads in place?

Is it possible / advisable to install screw in rocker studs on a SBC with the heads still on the engine?

Or, at what valve spring pressure / rpm do you need to switch from press-in to screw-in. I have crane springs, 120# closed, 462# open.

Thanks.

Yes you need studs. No I wouldn't try to install them on the motor. Dig in. It's a long winter.:D

I once drilled one out and converted it to a screw in stud in the boat,But it was Thursday night and I was leaving for vacation on Fri.Also I Drill holes for a living(Die Maker).I think that I saw somewhere that there is some sort of a jig to do them one at a time with a hand drill.Plus you have to machine the top of the stud boss off about an 1/8" ,one other cobbler trick is to pin the studs with a3/32" diameter roll pin.I say Pull the heads, Have the valves ground or "touched up" have studs installed and be ready in the spring with new gaskets and a fresh valve job.
