If you were buying a boat with these engines (300 hrs )and all tests checked out leakdown ect. When (hrs) would you expect some sort of rebuild? (Salt water boat)
|
you realize you're opening a big can of worms here with a question like this,,,,,,,,,,,,,I'd be wanting to pull the heads at 200 hours for valve/head inspection, as well as installing new springs. This way you'll get to visually inspect the water jackets and intake passages. This boat has made it to 300 hours and sounds like it's been maintained very well.

I am just curious as to how many hours people are getting on these engines before a minor or major overhaul is required. I know the blowers require lobe seals or something like that after a while.
I have searched back to see some peoples problems but nothing on how long they are lasting. |
Ray, isn't 3 boats enough??? :D ;)

100 hours.
Spun rod bearing. 15 hour oilchanges with Merc oil. Friend's 2002 575sci. |
I talked to a guy that had 600hrs on a pair. They ran just fine. He had them freshen this winter just because he thought it was time. They found very little wrong with them. ie (bad lifter).

From what I understand 300 hours is the recommended rebuild time. I'm sure allot has to do with how they were treated but if you didn't put the hours on yourself you just don't know.
|
TOTAL hours doesn't tell you much. They could have been "easy" or "hard."
Have a Merc Scan tool read the chip to get the true picture. 500 or 600 hundred hours is more than possible if they're well maintained and not "abused." If they run well, and look OK on compression and leak-down, they're probably fine @ only 300 hours. Of course, a peek inside couldn't hurt! |
Quiet Storm, what's the latest on your project? Anything I can do to help? Keep in mind I'm wearing a pretty blue cast on my right wrist,,,,,,,

The heads on the starboard engine weren't warped but needed a valve job badly. You could see light through the seats. Bored the block .004 to clean it up and put it all back together. This is a short version. Allot more was done to it. The heads on the port side are out getting reworked now. The head gaskets on that engine were ready to go too. All we can do after its back together is run them on a hose until next year. I'm already anxious to get back at it. Sorry to hear about the trouble with your sex life. Take it easy and you'll heal up quick.:D Thanks for the offer but there's not too much more we can do for now. Roger |
