Prop hubs

Having a problem with prop hubs on large shaft sportmaster lower unit. Prop shaft has no thrust washer due to larger diameter, problem is plastic bushing in hub has nothing to hold it in place. It is sliding back and rubbing the propshaft seals, burning them up. Does anbody know the fix for this problem?

Towel Boy The new larger prop shaft use no thrust washer. The prop shaft is straight with no shoulder. Larger diamater is stronger. The thrust is transfered at the end of the shaft near the threads.

I would try some type of adhesive and drive the bushing back into the prop hub, you might have to trim the end of the bushing if it is torn up from hitting the seal, maybe just some superglue but I think I would try sometype of locktite product for mounting bearings.
Hope this helps,
Caleb

You have a plastic hub? If the hub is moving in the prop, is the prop hitting the case also? My impression is something may be missing. Is there a shoulder in the hub that bottoms out at the end of the propshaft (@ the nut/washer?)for thrust. Is your boat near-by? I see you are local to me.

There is supposed to be a groove on the ID of the bore, at the drive end of the prop. A plastic retainer , kind of like an internal snap ring holds it in place. If the groove is missing, whoever bored it for the bushing left it out. It is kind of a difficult operation on a lathe, the prop is hard to hold. We made a special jig so that we can put that groove in, as well as bore the hubs.

I talked to Mercury racing today. They told me theres a new hub comming out soon with a c clip . Bret Anderson said he would two free off charge as soon as they are avalable. You've got to like that. :)
Thanks for the help guys
