preferred cam/heads for 302 Ford?
I'll probably soon be building a 302 up from a short block. I'd like good torque in the 2500-4500rpm range, and good reliability/longevity. Top end is secondary, but somewhat important.
Anybody have any camshaft or head recommendations? I have to go Ford because it's what came out of the boat and it is an insurance deal, plus it works with my flywheel and outdrive. Thanks! |
From a former 302 builder. Before you do anything dump the 302 and pick up a 351 windsor - everything will bolt up the same except the intake. Aftermarket heads will make the engine come alive.

Your stock heads are a great start for your application. If the heads are the E7TE castings a full port and polish will increase 40hp with a 1.80 intake and 1.50 exhaust. If the heads are the GT-40 style you will gain even more (with the stock valves). We did about 200 sets for Saleen Motorsports a few years back with great Success. Because of piston to valve clearance you are limited to about .510 lift. (That's OK because the ports are full at this point, so you dont need any more lift). Duration should be around 225-230. If you are using a Hd. roller the Ford Motorsports E cam will work. Keep in mind a bigger port flowing more air doesent mean more torque. We learned this on the street cars. The 302's are extremely sensitive to port volume. The smaller port would out accelerate the larger port.
