Shifting problem
I just purchased a new (used) boat and I'm having trouble shifting into forward gear. It seems as though the cable is adjusted just a bit too loose. There is no problem going into reverse or neutral but into forward I have to really push the gear lever ALL the way forward in order to get it to engage. Once engaged it never pops out. Is there an adjustment screw or something that I can do to try to correct this? The ****er is a Zero Effort control. Any help would be appreciated.

what kind of drive? bravo? alpha? trs? non merc?
They are Bravo XR drives, twins. Only the port motor seems to have this problem.
There must be someone out there that has had this problem before. I'm hoping that this is just an easy adjustment somewhere??
soudsn liek you might just need to adjust the littel end thining on the cable. If you have gaffrif shifters its pretty easy to adjust them.
They are Gaffrig. Do you make the adjustment at the shifter end or at the end on the motor?
Something sound wrong with that. Maybe something is loose on the shift plate. Compare the operation of one to the other while having a helper move the sticks. If a pivot bolt or something came loose you would get this result.
Hoping for the easy stuff, good luck :) Dave |
YOU MIGHT CHECK THE SHIFTER UNIT IN ENGINE COMPARTMENT. MAKE SURE NOTHING CAME LOOSE AND THAT THE SHIFT THROW IS CORRECT. THERE IS A PLASTIC GAGE THAT MERC MAKES TO SET THE THROW. RB

Under the Gaffrig contols there is a long bolt that looks like it has alot of adjustment on it - can I do any fine tuning there??
check the shift brackets first. If they are noraml then go to livorsi.com (gaffrig) and they have teh instruction sheet on how to adjust the throttle cables on the shifter
check linkage and all the other suggestions you've
received.if still it won't shift properly it's probably the shift cable between motor and drive they can be damaged due to heat etc. |
