thrust washer talk
When we brought the baja home this year for the winter. We found out that the thrust washer had worn out and was pushed into the bearing carrier.. The prop chewed half the retainer ring out... So a few weeks ago I talked to hydromotive. he called me a dumbie because I didn't check it on every outing. He said on the higher hp boats that weight alot, it destroys the washer all the time and they need to be changed alot.. So he advised me to check it every time I use the boat. So from him I bought a new washer which is the new thing. Its .060" thicker then the stock one and is brass so it does not chew up the shaft, plus it is only the diameter of the inner hub diameter, he said this washer was made out of a brass that was $1350 for a ten foot piece of stock..
even my 350 chevy powerplay is chewing the washer apart... i guess thats what i get for reaming the hell outta them :D So what thrust washers you guys running? stock or hi performance??? |
TRAVISS I HAD SAME PROBLEM WITH MY OUTERLIMITS THIS YEAR. SO I MADE & TESTED & MARKED WASHERS THAT WILL NOT BEND & WEAR AWAY.WHEN A WASHER WEARS LIKE THAT IT WILL CAUSE PROP TO LOOSEN ON SHAFT. AND YOU WILL BREAK SHAFTS.I BROAK 3 COUNT THEM 3! LOST SHAFT PROP& APPROX TOTAL OF 1200.00 EACH TIME TO FIX IT. THESE WASHERS ARE IN CP'S CATALOG THIS YEAR 2002. OR CALL ME AT 216-390-1330 I CAN TELL MORE ABOUT THEM. RON :)

I found that if you run your prop surfaced a lot you need to keep your prop a little tighter than Merc. specs. If the prop gets a little loose ( you can't feel it ) it will walk on the thrust washer and swedge it down the shaft.
|
I tighten mine down a lot tighter than specs.Doing this seems to help don't know if it's the right thing to do but I've had no problems with my shafts or drives so far (knocking on the desk)
Someone on the board was making stainless washers for racing but cautioned that they could be hard on the drives because they have no give to them. |
When I tightin the prop down its with a piece of wood and a 2' breaker bar :D they get nice and tight or I just nail it with the air gun :D :D
I'll try the hydromotive washer come spring and If I have a problem I'll look into the CP performance washer... |
THATS OK HYDROMOTIVE HAS A BIG NAME.AND A PRICE THAT GO'S WITH IT.PS I WOULDNT TOURCH PROP NUT OVER 80 FOOT LBS. YOU COULD GET INTO TROUBLE.
|
SCOTT I AM THE PERSON WHO INVENTED THE STAINLESS WASHER WITH A BRONZE INSERT.ADD IF YOUR THRUST WASHER GIVES AT ALL IT WILL NOT WORK. THRUST WASHERS ARE MADE EXACTLY FOR THRUST.IF THEY GIVE THEY BEND AND WILL NOT SPRING BACK.THIS IS WHEN THE PROP BECOMES LOOSE, AND YOUR IN TROUBLE.THE WASHER IS DESIGNED TO APPLY EVEN THRUST TO PROP SHAFT WHILE PROP IS ROTATING.AND IT MUST BE TIGHT AT ALL TIMES. :)
