How many folks run Closed Loop Cooling??
 

Has anyone installed closed cooling on an HP500? If so what are the best kits?

I added it onto my boat and I think it was a big mistake!!! I am taking it off. Unfortunatly there were a couple of reasons that it is going. I could not seem to keep my oil from cooking after I added the system. The engine stayed perfectly level in temp, but the oil was another story. In talking with Bruce he feels that I was not flowing enough water through my oil coolers after I added the closed system. I really like the idea of it, however I will not put it back on untill I get new blocks that I know are clean and free of debreis.

Thanks Audio. I have really seen a difference in the lack of temperature variations with the one on my 496HO. The concept makes perfect since. I have heard it is best to start when the engine is new and has not had raw seawater in it. This makes since. I would also think that the size of the exchanger is important. I was wondering if they have kits for HP500's. I saw on the BAM site a lot of there High End rigging examples have systems. Thanks again.

I was talking to a guy unfortunatly I can not remember who it was, but he said he had systems up to 1100hp!!!! :eek: :eek: For some odd reason either Eickhart or Stainless marine is sticking in my head.

I have had closed cooling on my 454 Magnum motor since new. I think it's a great system. I have had no problems with it. But, I also believe that if you don't put it on when the motor is new, don't bother.

What system did you put on your 454?

Bob, I run closed cooling system on all my boats. I have never had an oil problem and have run them on motors since 1966 in our 16 Donzi with an H&M engine. My Corsican has a 351 Cleveland with 425 HP and I run one on that no problem. I have a system for my blown 502(698HP) that’s works well also. The reason it isn’t on the boat at this moment is it is on loan to company for testing on a very large engine for an offshore race boat, not to be named at this time. The trick is to get a heat exchanger the right size. Sen-Dure made mine for my applications. There are two advantages, 1) engine temp can be run hotter and more even and avoiding the possibility of thermal shock, while keeping the exhaust cooler to avoid salt crystallization. 2) No salt comes in contact with the internals of the engine. Innovations Has one for the HP500 its about 30 inches long and 8 inches wide and is a 3, maybe 4 pass exchanger.
