Tow vehicle failure

1996 Dodge Ram 1500 w/positraction 2WD 360 v-8. 76k miles.
Just replaced the pinion gear bearings in the rear axle ring/pinion gear set. Appears one roller bearing failed and fragments scored the remaining roller bearings. Could this be a towing related failure, lube failure or bad luck ?
Almost as expensive as a lower unit gearset repair !!!

The Chrysler 9.25" is pretty tough and substantialling bigger than chevy's 12 bolt they use in 1/2 tons. I'd ask the shop how often they see this problem- I suspect it is a fluke. If you do tow often/heavy it would be wise to change the gear oil more often and use a good sythetic. The bigger Dodges use synthetic from the factory. Good luck!

My dad had the same thing happen with a 96' Dodge Ram at 45000 miles. It happened on a trip to the lake towing a 22' Checkmate.

Pretty normal problem with any brand if alot of towing is done with 1/2 ton truck. My Chevy pinion just gave out at 60k almost all towing miles. Bigger trucks have bigger rearends and bearings etc. Just remember to do frequent lube changes to prolong life.
