Cooling system hose routing
I'm setting up a big block for my boat this winter and basically starting from scratch and collecting parts as I go. I was looking through the engine picture thread in the GD section and see just about everyone has a different way of routing their hoses and some have more hoses that others. I see a lot of different t-sat housings and some have a circulating pump and some don't. Any suggestions on the best way to route the system staring from the pick-up at the transom? I don't want to spend a fortune for polished and stainless parts but do want a clean looking job like I see in the most of the photos.
BTW, it will have separate coolers for PS and oil and a Gil sea strainer and I plan on keeping the circulating pump. Is there a min and/or max height for the coolers and strainer? Anyone have pics were all the cooling system can be seen? Thanks Joey |
Hi Joey.
I have a Merc water flow diagram for 454/502. It shows all the hoses and flow direction. If you give me a fax # I'll send it to you or when I get home I'll scan it and post it here. Paul. |
Thanks Paul, that would be a good start. I sent you an e-mail.

If you're going to keep the circulating pump, your options are limited. See the following link for the standard merc setup. Be sure to put the strainer before the cooler. Coolers can be before or after the pump.

BTW, oil coolers and heat exchangers are more efficient if the flows are opposite directions.
