Is there anything that dissolves Silicone glue?
 

I am re-mounting my new GPS Speedo and the previous installer used silicone glue to mount it with. Subsequently I have glue on my powdercoated trim ring that I need to get off without messing up the finish. I have carved it down with a razor knife but need to go further. Any good solution that will remove this stuff?

You can try laquer thinner. Just make sure that it doesn't eat the powdercoat first.

Acetone

Vinegar will remove silicone that is not cured....it may work on cured if the item is soaked in it. At least that cannot hurt the powdercoat.

wd-40 works ok for takeing glue off
or you can go over to BoatUS and get some stuff called anti-bond....works good too.

3m adhesive remover is the only thing I have seen remove dried silicone, had to see it to believe it, and it is safe for almost all finishes. Any auto parts store has it. Kind of like mineral spirits, but stronger.

I have used acetone on all my powercoated parts. My friend owns a powercoating business and that is what he uses to clean the tape residue off the new parts he does.

If you use your thumb and press a bit you can sometimes roll the RTV off a slippery surface such as power coating. Takes some elbow grease, but I have done it. On a trim ring that wouldnt be that much work.

I bought a can of the 3M adhesive remover, now to find some dried silicon and see how it works..... Thanks..
