Labbing 25p mirages

I'd like to gain more speed by getting my props labbed. They are 25P mirages pushed by twin 454 mags (1.5 geared bravo 1) on a 6500 lbs 30' scarab. These props let the engines rev to 5000rpm, just where I prefer. Most threads I've read on labbing say to expect an additional 200-400 rpm with labbing. Therefore to stay in the 5000rpm range, I would need 27 pitch props labbed? Sound right? Do you think I could have my 25p props re-pitched to the 27 during labbing? Any advise would be great.

blue thunder,
I have the same exact problem. I would like to get my 25P Mirage Plus 3-blades labbed but they already push my 454 Mags to about 4,950 rpm's. I talked to York Propellers who suggested I move to labbed 26P Bravo I 4-blades. That's nice, however I don't want to spend that sort of cash. If we could get these props up a pitch or two and labbed that would be the best scenario. Let me know what you find out? :)

Advantage... I'm sure we could repitch to 26, but unsure about 27. Did they give you a estimated cost on the setup they recommended? What are you running for boat?

Don't go with the 4 blade prop unless you have problems with blowout on turns or getting onto plane. The 4 blade prop will be 2 to 3 mph slower than a 3 blader. I have heard that it isn't wise to repitch a prop because it will tend to return to the original pitch. The labbed 27 should turn about the same rpm as the 25's you have now. I run labbed 26 bravo 1's at 5400 rpm on a 34 scarab.

You can get them repitched to 26's, but I dont think 27's. I had 23's repitched to 24's. The difference....2-3 mph gain, with no rpm gain. When you go up 1 pitch, you lose 200 rpms, when you lab, you usually gain that back.

blue thunder, I run a 1999 29' Baja Outlaw with twin 454 Mags. I would be very interested in moving up to a 26 pitch labbed 3-blade Mirage Plus. Have you found out any additional information? Chad Hill or York Propellers will probably be our best most inexpensive option.

blue thunder 01-28-2002 07:05 PM

Advantage... I haven't learned anything more. I was thinking about buying the set of 25p mirages in the classifieds and getting them labbed. That way I could alway go back the the 25 mirages I currently run. Sounds like it would be best for us to find 26s or 27s and have them labbed. Anyone have anything available?

blue thunder, are you not comfortable with re-pitching your 25's to 26's with a lab job? Have you talked with any professionals who advise you to buy a second set of 25's? Thanks for the information.

There is o post in the prop section from chad hill offering to lab for a 100$. I'mm sure he would help you out on any info you need!

mwillis 01-28-2002 08:16 PM

Give John Janaky at Pro-Pellers a call he does all of my props. He can give you the correct answers. I believe he told me you cannot really repitch a prop but by changing the formed edge cupping you can adjust the rpm. His phone 262 534 4440.

There have been many posts saying that York does a good job, I had a pair of cleavers done by Chad Hill, they came back looking very poor, even to my unexperienced eye, when I tried them the boat is hard to get on plane and slower than stock, would not recommend him.

I'm in a similar situation, but starting with 25P Quicksilver's. 272 Fromula with twin 454 330hp's. runs 64.9999 at 4400 rpm.
I WANT 65mph OR MORE :D luckily, I have RPM yet before worrying about bottom end. How about if I buy someone's mirage or mirage plusses, that gives you some $$ for new 27's,
If it only cost $100 each to lab, I'll try it on my quicksilvers. otherwise looking to upgrade to mirage plus or Bravo I. Of course, I would prefer to try them first before spending the $$$.

blue thunder 01-29-2002 06:15 PM

Advantage.. No I'm not worried about getting my props repitched to 26 and labbed, just a little uneasy about burning my bridge. I hit several logs last year with my cruiser (different boat)and had spare propage on hand. I'd hate to wipe out fragile labbed props and not have spares.

Repitching in my opinion works well. I've done it to pretty much every prop I've ever owned with the desired rpm change. I wouldn't hesitate to do that again.

Rambuncious... I think you'd do very well to try a set of 23 mirages, or lab the 25 pitch props you have.

After testing several boats with 4 different prop makers and 15 different types of props as well as labbed props all last spring all I can say is there are more props out there than the Marage plus and the BravoI props labbed or otherwise. On my own unit I found the Merc props not my first choice. There were 2 makers and 4 different props that were faster than either the Marage plus and the BravoI. All boat hulls are different so you have to try different on your specific boat.

blue thunder, thanks for the information. I'm going to send my props to York and have them take a look. Good luck with your set. I'll post my results when I get them back.

Out There 01-30-2002 05:16 PM

I just got a set of mirage plus back from York today. They certainly look great and I can't wait to try them out. I also spoke with John several times and he was a big help

Advantage 01-30-2002 08:54 PM

Yeah, I've heard one testimonial after another that York is the best for the money. I'm sending my props in this weekend.

JimV 01-31-2002 01:44 PM

When it comes to labbing a prop, York Propeller beat them all at Lake-X about a year or so ago...even Merc. Call Tommy at WPM and he will give you the scoop. 919-371-7567. He's tried many of the better well known prop shops and hasen't found anything as good and as consistant as York.

BajaRunner 01-31-2002 04:29 PM

Anyone know what he charges?

Out There 01-31-2002 08:18 PM

York charged me $150ea plus $25ea return freight.
