Cam upgrade

Please help me select a cam!

Sonic 35ss.

461 cui.
9.5:1 compression ratio
rectangular port heads 990
weiand team G (looks like stealth) dual plane
Holley 850
Gil exhaust (silent choise).

Prefere hydraulic flat tappered (not roller lifters).

Takes a long time to look at all available cams (crane, comp, isky, ...), give me a shortcut!

I'm no cam expert, but I do know that the short riser Gil Magnum Choice exhaust will hold you back (I have the same exhaust). The exhaust flows fine, but I think those risers can only accept very minimal cam overlap (if any), so your duration and LSA choices are going to be limited. If you run a Crane 168731, you would need to have it ground with a 112 or 114 LSA. You might get by with a 168721, but I think that's a significant drop in power from the 731. That said, you should still be able to make a lot of power.

Anyway, as I said, I'm certainly not a cam expert. So I'm very interested to hear what the smarter guys have to say.

Two good hydraulic flat tap cams are the crane cam found in Merc's 370,400,420,425,525... and Edelbrock's torquer cam. I don't have part numbers for you, but they can be found easily on their web-sights.

Both have 114 LSA so the overlap is minimal; there won't be any problems with your exhaust.

Erson JB 100 on a 112+4
Specs are 228/235 @ .050" with .540" lift.
I have used this cam on a couple of motors very similar to yours and it works great. Prop for 5200 to 5500 max.
No reversion with stock manifolds! Very good power from 2500 to 5500.

I use the Edelbrock torker cam for very similar engines with good success. I have the same exhaust. That cam is 224, 232, .527, .553 on a 114 seperation.

Thanks!
