Bent Spindle on Eagle Triple Axle
Have an Eagle triple axle trailer with a bent spindle. The spindle looks to be welded to the axle. Can these be straightened or do I need to replace the complete axle?
Thanks, Jim |
Replace
I would replace it without question. You will have the peace of mind and not worry about a weakened spindle.
In order to straighten it, you will have to heat it up significantly. Once that is done, any heat treatment will be reduced or lost, plus the welds may not hold up as well anymore. What happened to bend it? -Larry |
Not sure how it got bent. Put new tires on it this summer and made a LOTO run. RF tire on the front axle is badly feathered. Took a look at it and the spindle is noticably bent. Any idea on a place to buy and a price to replace? Have a trip to make to LOTO in two weeks.
Thanks, Jim |
I had a bent one on a shorelander trailer (thanks to my wife) I pulled the whole axle off and took it to a alxe repair shop. He had the right tools the straighten it back. I think he charged me $50.00 This was about 10 years ago. Never any probllems since.

If I were to get the axle straightened, the only place that I would let do it is an axle repair shop. Around my area there are very few (if any) places that will do this kind of work.
So, I would spend the $$ and get the axle replaced. One the best trailer parts sites you can try is www.championtrailers.com. They have just about every part you will need for your trailer. Good Luck! -Larry |
i also years ago lent my trailer out and when i finally got it back it was in bad shape including a bad spindle. i replaced the axle as it was very reasonable to replace verse repair. check out the prices you may be surprised

Decal on the axle says it's a LaSalle Deitch. Made in Elkhart, Indiania. Anyone know if I can buy factory direct?
Thanks, Jim |
got mine right from eagle for $75

I HAD ALL 3 OF MY AXELS REPLACED AFTER 90,000 MILES. THEY BROKE WHERE THE SPINDEL IS WELDED TO THE TUBING. ONE AXEL COST 400.00 TO REPLACE WITH R&R. BUT YOU HAVE TO PULL THE WHOLE AXEL OUT TO FIX IT. IF THEY STRAIGHTEN IT BE SURE THERE ARE NO CRACKS IN THE WELDS.

Thanks All,
I found a replacement here in town today. Only $87.50. Thanks Again, Jim |
Great News Jim!
Don't forget to use new U-Bolts and plates. Cheap insurance for peace of mind. If your springs are really rusted, you may want to do those as well while you have it all apart. Good Luck! -Larry |

Tom,
I picked it up locally from "Fleet Pride", (402) 331-5515. Mine is a triple axle and the part number from Fleet Pride is KD3587-A. Comes without the leaf spring pads. The part number for those is 90302. $87.58 with tax and everything. Hope this helps. if you need to call me- (402) 706-4141. Jim |
THANKS FOR YOUR HELP. I MAY GIVE YOU A CALL. TOM

you're lucky you caught it early! We drove down from Chi to LOTO one year. After pulling out of the Amaco station in town i looked in the side mirror and saw a tire rolling in the middle of the street!! At that very same time a guy pulls up along side of us and says you just lost a tire!!! All in one swoop i lost the tire/brakes/backing plate and it severed the brake line so now the trailer had no brakes!!! Went to a local welder who thought he could just weld the backing plate back on the tube! first time putting the trailer back on the ground it bent like a car with busted ball joints! we ripped the tire off and went to the hardware store and chained that axle side up and out of the way. It was a long ride back home needless to say and about 60miles from home we blew a tire on that side that was carrying the extra load!! My advice to anyone thinking of trying to fix and axle is DONT THINK ABOUT IT! Its cheaper in the long run to just replace it!!

Been through this on a couple of trailers. Turns out most trailer manufacturers get their axles from just a few sources, and as you found out, they were actually very cheap. There's a northern hydraulics distributor down the street from me that was able to get complete axles for almost any trailer. The price new, with brakes, was comparable to rebuilding costs.
