Engine Recommendation for Fountain 10-Meter
Gents - I'm new to the list and seeking feedback. I own an '84 Fountain 10-meter with 240 original hull hours and zero hours on refurbished SSM II's and trannies. The boat was original powered with Gale Banks twin 630hp turbo's.
I need to replace the engines or sell the boat without power. I'm told that the two best choices are either carburated 502/500hp's or 540/600hp's with remanufactured long blocks ranging from $6200-$9500 each. I'd appreciate hearing recommendations and feedback. The boat itself is located in lower NY and is 98% fresh water used. |
Did your boat come from Sassy Marina in Algonac Mich? If so I've been in it. Very nice ride at about 88 in rough Sunday water. I'd go with the 540's to get more hp and go even faster. There are a lot of threads around here describing good 540 buildups.
 |
Several years ago I repowered my 10M ICBM with a pair of new GEN 6 454HO`s from 1800runsnew.
They were great to deal with and had the best price around..and warrantied motors to boot! |
Where can I find them? I'm also debating the 'remanufactured vs. new' scenario.

try total marine performance.
OSO name totalmp do a search here and you can find some good info. |
mshea,
If interested I have 2 502" 600HP natural asperated BBC's for sale. One is a brand new rebuild and the other has about 50 hours. All the good part's Brodix, Crane, Dart, MSD, JE, Holley you name it. would be looking for 8500.00 each or 10,000.00 each with CMI elbow top headers. |

I guess the 'mo cubic inches, the better' is to be expected here, but seriously...I'm interested in reliability as much as anything. I don't plan to Poker run the boat or compete....just run it for long stretches up the Hudson or the length of Long Island Sound. But yes, I like 'instant throttle response'.
To that end, are the 540's worth the price premium over 502's? |
You can make the same or more HP with the 540's and keep the reliability. (since you won't have to push them as hard)
I'm building a 572 for just this reason. Go for the 540's if it's in the budget. |
what are you asking for the boat without power?
