Compass Repair

Fluid is dry in an airguide compass dash mount wheel on center gimbals. Believe it will work again with some fluid to float the wheel. What is the fluid that is inside these? Needs to be something that won't freeze and light the dash on fire. Any ideas?

If it's a rebuildable compass, contact Airguide. They should be able to supply you with what you need.

Some time ago I rebuilt a compass on one of my former boats. I think I got the fluid from westmarine. You had to buy a gallon but after I spilled it once, I was glad I did. It was a very easy job once I got a second set of hands.

If you send it back to the manufacturer they'll usually rebuild it for a nominal fee, if not for free. Sometimes they even send a brand new one to you.
By the way, that's mineral spirits in the compass.

Thanks for the input. I'll pull out the compass this weekend and assess what is the best course of action disassembly myself or manufacture rebuild.

the fluid is just common mineral spirits, put it in the freezer before you refill the compass, find the leak before you refill it or you'r wasting your time

Seems like some models of the Richie offshore were glycerine filled to better combat the vibration...

Did one last year. 5200 sealant around the bottom then drilled a small hole in the top to insert the mineral spirits. Putting the mineral spirits in the freezer allows it to expand while reaching room temp and force the air out. After the small bubble disappeares use a small dab of epoxy to seal the hole.
