Closed cooling / Electric Water Pumps ?
 

Hello,
It looks like I will be getting a new boat, a 30' scarab (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2453858863) - There are no water pumps on the engines, so he must be running electric ones or just using the drive impellers (hoping it's the former).
Either way, I live in Florida. Florida means salt water (unless I head upstream on the river, which I usually don't do). I know closed cooling is used in really cold and salty water, but I don't know much else. Could you please send me links / information regarding good closed cooling setups? Right now on my scorpion (The scarab won't be here for another two weeks or so) I have to rinse the engines after EVERY run and there are times I would like to not worry (for when I shutdown and there is no freshwater - like at a resturant or an island, etc)
Also, should I install some engine-driven pumps? I know I would need electric ones for the heat exchangers, so I probabily won't ditch those.

I have been using Mercruisers' closed cooling system for years. It works great. But, in my system the manifolds are still salt water cooled. There are manufacturers who sell closed cooling systems that also cool the manifolds. I don't remember the link for it. If I find it I will post it.

What type of cost are we talking? $500? $5000? The scarab has dry exaust so it should be possible to include the water jackets on the exaust in the closed cooling - Just hook the water jackets into a Y and back into the cooler. Either way, The block is a lot more expensive then the exaust, and that's what I am worried about protecting.

That boat has crossovers so there are no engine driven water pumps. The sea water pump takes care of all the water flow in the engine. This is fine as long as you don't run too cold or if you want to run fresh water cooling. The exhaust is normal wet manifolds so you can use a full freshwater cooling system if you'd like. Kits are available in the after market for about 600 bucks-do a search on any search engine for freshwater cooling and see what comes up.

Thanks; All of these kits would work fine even if I upgrade to 540-600 CID blown engines? Either way I will be cooling my exaust since it's closed. I've thought about adding some radiators for pump cloggs / testing on trailer / etc. Any makes of exchangers I should avoid ? or are they all about the same ?
