Big Block Buildup

1 Attachment(s)
Well it’s winter and I am repowering the boat again. Last year we started with a stock 502 added Canfield AL heads, solid lifters and a 3.3 Whipple SC. EMI headers with silent choice and a 1050 Dominator on top. We just Dynoed it and at 6100RPM we made 780HP with 8Ibs of boost with a very mild cam.

This year I plan to use a Merlin block 4.5 bore X 4.25 stroke, Callies Racemaster crank, Oliver rods and Ross pistons. So the base is a 540ci. I plan to use most of the original top end with a new cam and stud girdles. It will also be running on 110-race fuel. Whipple said the blower might have trouble feeding this motor so we are planning to go up to 8.75 or 9 to 1 compression and run 12Ibs of boost

I’m trying to make 1000HP so any input is appreciated.

Will the Wipple push enough air to produce 12 lbs of boost in a free breathing 540?

I ran 12Ibs on the 502 no problem.

I think you can get close to that number with athe Whipple but you are probably going to have to experiment with the blower pulley size to get to higher boost.Remember, when inches go up, boost goes down.
Check with Dustin at Whipple, don't think anyone here will know as much about it as he does.
Don't forget to intercool your investment!
Good Luck,
Raylar;)

As Raylar stated, as the inches go up the boost goes down. Regardless of inches, the single 3.3 blower is only good for about 900 hp. It is possible to make about 950 hp but the life expectancy of the blower is greatly reduced. We have a lot of experience with Whipple superchargers and will be glad to answer any questions that you may have. 1-985-649-9888 TMP

I would think you would need a dual carb setup as well. Maybe an 8-71 or 10-71 blower to produce enough boost.

I am not to familiar with the Whipple.

Dustin said 1000HP on 110 octane is possible. But he offered another idea. Put two 3.3 whipples on and make 1100+ HP on 93 octane. I can offset the additional blower cost in race fuel savings. Has anyone done this?
